Loretta's folks have reached out to remind me that last week was 50 years since "The Letter" was released by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn!

Unlike many of their up-tempo or harmonious duets, "The Letter" is delivered almost entirely as spoken dialogue over a soft, ballad-style musical backing. It features Twitty and Lynn trading lines in a conversational format.

It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and reached No. 1 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

🎶 "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man..."

Released on May 28, 1973, as the lead single and title track from their third collaborative studio album Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man on MCA Records.
It became the duo’s third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

Loretta shared that her husband, Mooney Lynn, discovered the song and strongly encouraged them to record it. Produced by the legendary Owen Bradley at Bradley’s Barn in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, it became a standout in their highly successful duet partnership.

In 2025, Billboard ranked it No. 81 on its list of the 100 best country songs of all time.
It earned a Gold certification from the RIAA in 2024 (over 500,000 units).
The next generation keeps it alive: Conway’s grandson Tre Twitty and Loretta’s granddaughter Tayla Lynn (performing as Twitty and Lynn) often perform it together.

Twitty and Lynn were never romantically involved but formed one of country music’s most awarded male-female duos, releasing 11 albums and scoring five No. 1 hits together.

On This Date in Country Music History:

June 17th was a relatively quiet day in country music.

We celebrate Red Foley who was born in this day in 1910. Born in Blue Lick, Kentucky, Red was one of the most important and versatile figures in post-World War II country music, Foley sold over 25 million records and helped modernize and popularize the genre for mainstream audiences.

He was a Grand Ole Opry star, hosted the pioneering TV show Ozark Jubilee (1955–1960), and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1967. Foley passed away in 1968.
