I recently received a diary as a gift. It's a personalized notebook with a gold letter 'S' on the elastic closure. The words inscribed on the cover are, 'Sarah's Dreams.'

I've bought many notebooks, journals and diaries in the past, and they usually end up sitting on my bookshelf for months or even years. Occasionally I need to take notes, for a meeting or workshop, so I take one off the shelf and scribble a few lines in it, before leaving the notebook in a backpack or in a desk drawer and forgetting about it once again.

Something feels different about this diary.

I've had it on my nightstand for two weeks—close to me, but distant in a way—and finally decided I was going to write in it this past weekend. I have to admit that I was a little nervous about marking it with my pen for the first time. I didn't want to ruin it with messy handwriting or scribbled out mistakes.

I started jotting down ideas for a poem. My process is to brainstorm until I find a word, phrase or idea that sticks with me. I used a page for this brainstorming process before deciding on a topic for the poem. Then, I penned the first draft.

Once finished, I put down my pen and held up the open notebook. In all honesty, it was a mess. My handwriting is not perfect, and there are crossed out lines and scribbles. Some of the lines are written on a diagonal, and there are places where words are squished into the small, blank spaces between the lines.

At the same time, there's a certain beauty to the mess in my diary. All of the scribbles and crooked lines are reminders that the writing journey is rarely straightforward. In fact, nothing is ever straightforward.

And in looking at the first pages in my moleskine notebook, I realized that the gift I was given when I received this diary isn't a physical diary itself.

My diary holds more than words—it holds beauty and mess together. It holds a piece of my journey. A piece of my dreams.

So, what's the real gift of my new diary?
..the poems and stories I dare to pen. ✨

(Note: This is not a sponsored post; I just love this diary so much and thought I would mention where it's from.)

I'm not very good at keeping surprises to myself.

My wedding anniversary is next week and I'm dying to give my husband his anniversary gift. I just want to see his reaction when he opens his new [insert name of gift - just in case he's reading this]. I keep asking him if he wants me to give him the gift early, but he tells me that ruining the surprise wouldn't be very romantic.

And while I'm doing my best to keep the anniversary gift under wraps (literally... under the wrapping paper), there's one surprise I decided I can't keep to myself any longer: the new Sad Girl Diaries logo.

I've been working with lots of possible designs, looking for one that really represents this platform. I think I finally found 'the one.'

Swipe to see it... and be sure to let me know your reaction in the comments below!

P.S. I hope you also enjoy this picture of me reading upside down on the floor of my local bookstore. I know, super casual ✨

Dear reader,

My name is Sarah, and I’m the original ‘Sad Girl’ behind the Sad Girls Club Literary Blog.

I’ve been publishing short stories, poetry, and creative nonfiction on SadGirlsClubLit.com since August 2020 and have loved creating a space for readers and writers to explore human emotions through writing.

Although I love the current name of my site, Sad Girls Club is evolving. That’s why on August 14, 2023, I am officially changing the name of my platform to…

💜 Sad Girl Diaries—An Online Literary Magazine 💜

I love the idea of diaries starting as blank pages waiting to be filled with stories, secrets, and life experiences. And that’s exactly what my platform is—a collective diary filled with hundreds of posts reflecting the emotional journeys of readers and writers just like you.

Sad Girl Diaries will be a space where you can connect with others through the power of poetry and storytelling. It’ll be a place where you can grab a warm cup of tea, light a candle and find relatable poetry and stories.

Stay tuned because I’ll be posting updates on Instagram as well as through email (send me a DM with your email address if you’d like to be added to the email list).

If you would like to contribute to Sad Girls Diaries, you can find the Call for Submissions on SadGirlsClubLit.com (linked in bio). All writing submitted starting today will be considered for publication on SadGirlDiaries.com starting August 14th.

Thanks for supporting this journey. I hope you’ll find a home here in this space 💜

We asked emerging poets to send us short poems for Instagram posts and were amazed by the incredible submissions we received. We're excited to start posting these short, powerful pieces! If you would like to receive a DM with the link to submit your own poem through Submittable, please comment on this post.

Here's a poem by Josephine Gregory (.isla.x) called "Broken Winter Branch." Josephine is a first-year student at the University of Exeter in Devon, England, where she is majoring in Psychology. Growing up in Washington, DC she developed a love of poetry and writing, particularly in the romantic and confessional styles. She is particularly fond of stars and the night sky, alongside exploring liminal spaces.

Thank you to Josephine for sending us your poem!
