Biola University received a $40 million donation from a Silicon Valley executive to advance tech education programs. The funds will go towards building two new engineering garages and laboratories, establishing endowed professorships and student scholarships, equipment, research partnerships and academic and career development opportunities for our students within the tech division of the School of Science, Technology and Health.

President Barry Corey announced the news on Wednesday morning during the opening moments of the annual Torrey Memorial Bible Conference. With students packed into Chase Gymnasium, the lights dimmed and dramatic music played as a drone flew overhead and delivered a red envelope to the university president.

Torrey Conference 2025 is quickly approaching campus, with banners hanging across campus and a daily countdown outside of the Student Union Building. It’s not difficult to sense the excitement that Biola has for this annual event. However, new students may wonder, what exactly should they expect to gain from Torrey Conference?

On Oct. 2, the Departments of Sociology and Modern Languages held a screening of the first episode of “Living Undocumented,” a Netflix series about families facing the challenges of the American immigration system. The documentary aimed to bring light to the situations of the undocumented, and to see how faith and community can help improve the outcome for these individuals.

It was with grieving hearts that Biola students, faculty, and staff learned of Chief John Ojeisekhoba’s death on Labor Day, less than 24 hours after he died from cardiac arrest on Aug. 31st, 2025. Chief O was a faithful father, friend and follower of Christ. Led by the Lord’s love, Ojeisekhoba began with Biola Campus Safety 25 years ago, finishing in his position as the Associate Vice President and Chief of Campus Safety. As a former Biola global student, collegiate athlete and Mock Rock participant, Chief O was one of us. The buildings he patrolled were once the hallways he navigated to Bible classes or club meetings. Known for his contagious joy, sense of style, and pursuit of justice, Ojeisekhoba’s life was marked by faithfulness and giving back to his community. While one could say his infectious personality made him a “campus celebrity,” who was Chief O and how will his legacy continue through the lives of Biola faculty, staff and students?

If you didn’t already know, Live from Lot-F is a sketch comedy show & club produced by students Elijah Van Gaasbeek, Bella Greer, and Justice Baker. The club is in its second year, approaching its third performance. But where exactly did this club come from, and what inspired that name? The initial concept was conceived in a conversation near the creek in front of Stewart and Hart Hall before being rudely (yet memorably) interrupted by some neighborhood kids.

In a time when political views are becoming increasingly divisive, the right of free speech makes it possible to have civil discourse and debate controversial issues. Unfortunately, with individuals such as Charlie Kirk being assassinated for debating his political and spiritual beliefs, and Jimmy Kimmel, whose show was temporarily suspended due to criticism from the Trump administration, the freedom of expression is under heavy surveillance. It is in times like these that journalists must reestablish their values and vision to uphold the freedom of expression and diverse perspectives; the opinions staff is no exception.

On Sept. 23, Biola was honored to hold “Heading Home: Glimpses of New Jerusalem”. The traveling exhibition, consisting of different pieces of art, follows a two-week pilgrimage of a small band of Christians visiting churches and religious sites across Europe and the Middle East. Roberta Green Ahmanson visited Biola to present “Heading Home: A 21st Century Pilgrimage,” a documentary of the journey following the group’s effort to seek beauty through the Gospel, starting in Jerusalem, through Italy, and ending in London.

With a strong start to their season, the women’s soccer team was named PacWest’s Team of the Week, and senior business major Marije (Mimi) Rechin was awarded PacWest Player of the Week, Monday, Sept. 15 after an impressive week of games.

From the sidelines we see the cheers and encouragement that they give one another after a victory, and a pat on the back when something unexpected happens. The team has shown how positivity has been the key to their success.

On Sep. 25, the music of the mariachi band filled the air surrounding Metzger Lawn as students arrived with event books in hand, ready to experience what Fiesta Latina had to offer for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month. With colorful booths emitting smells of Hispanic cuisine, fun trivia opportunities, and a live Loteria game, students were able to experience a variety of cultures.

Charlie Kirk built a career by debating. Whether he was sparring with students on college campuses under a tent with his trademarked “prove me wrong” slogan or rallying young conservatives into a national movement to elect the president, Kirk thrived on political confrontation and the spotlight it brought. His sudden and tragic death has now thrust him into another, posthumous, debate over his legacy and what his passing means in a nation already reckoning with rising political violence.

They pray together, play hard, and push each other to grow as athletes and as men of faith. Still, the Biola men’s lacrosse team often flies under the radar on campus, hardly getting the recognition they deserve.
