Before the large annual fireworks event officially began at La Mirada Regional Park, there were many other hyperlocal Independence Day celebrations in the La Mirada area, similar to to the Green Hills Parade of today.

In the early 20th century, ranch hands at founder Andrew McNally’s Windermere Ranch recalled munching on ice-cold watermelon on July 4 underneath the shade of pepper trees.

This photo is from 66 years ago in 1959 near Tricia Lane and Hayford Street where La Mirada’s first present-day homes were built.

This is thought to be one of the first modern era neighborhood celebrations in La Mirada.
