AISWCD and the Vermilion County Soil and Water Conservation District mourn the loss of long-time director John Maudlin, whose remarkable 50 years of service left an enduring mark on conservation in Illinois.

John was elected to the Vermilion County SWCD Board in 1974 and went on to serve as vice-chairman and later chairman from 1991–1996. His leadership extended beyond the county; in the 1990s, he served as one of the AISWCD’s four state vice presidents, participated on several executive committees, attended NACD national conventions, and led LUC 7 for many years.

A lifelong conservationist, John lived by the principle of leaving the land better than he found it. From adopting no-till farming in the early 1990s to enrolling contour strips, waterways, pollinator habitat, and cover crops, he was an early adopter of practices that improved soil health and water quality long before they were commonplace.

Locally, John was a driving force behind soil health days, field events, tree sales, and annual meeting planning. He championed bringing new and younger leaders into the SWCD, stepping into an associate director role in 2006 to make room for future voices. He attended every monthly board meeting until his health declined, remaining passionate about both his district and all 97 Illinois SWCDs.

John’s service reached far beyond conservation. He was deeply involved in the Georgetown Fair Ag/Produce Department and was honored with the Vermilion County Farm Bureau’s 2021 Distinguished Service Award. Known for his humility, John often said, “I haven’t done anything,” despite a lifetime of meaningful accomplishments.

A farmer at heart, raised on his family farm near Georgetown, John embraced innovation, hard work, and stewardship. Even after retiring from full-time farming at age 80, he never stopped climbing onto his tractor.

John’s legacy will live on in the healthier soils, cleaner water, and stronger conservation community he helped build. You can read the full obituary as attached. https://obituaries.sunsetfuneralhome.com/john-maudlin
