Daniel Goodwin Sr., a North Omaha businessman and civil rights leader who owned Goodwin’s Spencer Street Barbershop, has died.

Daniel Markin Goodwin, Sr. long-time North Omaha business owner and civil rights leader passed this morning, Sunday, January 4th, 2026 at the age of 93 years old.

Dan and his wife of over 70 years, Andrea Goodwin, started Goodwin’s Spencer Street Barbershop in 1955. Dan was a prominent advocate for equality for African Americans during the 1950s and 60s, attending the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 and hosting Malcom X, as a member of The Citizens Coordinating Committee for Civil Liberties in 1964.

Dan cut hair at Goodwin’s until 2020, when the pandemic forced businesses to close.

Goodwin’s was one of the longest operating barbershops in the state of Nebraska at that time.

Dan will be remembered for his love for the community, his commitment to his family and his generosity.
