Good Morning!!!
Fightin' Irish Friday
On Sunday, August 31st, our #6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will meet the #10 Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium to open the season. With the rivalry renewed, the stakes have never been higher.
The bad blood between these two teams dates back to the days of Lou Holtz and Jimmy Johnson, with the infamous 1988 game forever known as the Catholics vs. the Convicts. During the pregame warm-ups, Miami exited the field by running through the Irish players on their way to the tunnel. Words were exchanged, punches were thrown, and when the two sides finally separated, Notre Dame and Miami went to their locker rooms for last-minute preparations. Giving one of his best speeches ever, Lou Holtz reminded his Lads to demonstrate good sportsmanship. He stressed that anyone conducting themselves otherwise would no longer be a member of this football team.
And then it happened.
Looking into the eyes of the '88 team, Holtz finished with "After we win the game, if Miami wants to fight, fine, we'll meet them in the alley. And if they do, you save Jimmy Johnson's ass for me."
In that moment, every member of that team forged a bond that couldn't be broken. Everyone in a blue and gold uniform leapt to their feet, surged out of the locker room and blew the doors off as they took the field. Coach Holtz had more to say, but it didn't matter...the line in the sand had been drawn. Their assignment was clear, and our Lads fought and clawed to a 31-30 victory on that perfect October day.
Now, the Irish travel to Miami, where the script is flipped, but the goal remains the same: beat Miami and take the first step towards returning to glory.
Lads and Lasses, START THE CARR!
Gather Domers near and far
to witness a rivalry reborn,
Built upon hatred and scorn
Cue our music that deserves a Grammy
BLAST it loud enough to hear in Miami
Glory Mantle Cloaks Thee,
Golden is thy fame...
HERE COME THE IRISH OF NOTRE DAME!!!
