Breaking into the Film Business

Have you ever wondered how people get their start in the film business? There are so many ways to be a part of moviemaking, and many different paths to get there. Tune in each week to hear from professionals across different departments share how they got their start, and learn about the variety of skills needed to bring a story to the screen!

🎀 Speakers for this session:

Thomas Pell β€” Independent audio engineer, producer, and musician with over two decades of experience in performing, recording, mixing, and post-production. Founder and lead engineer of Pell Productions LLC in Olympia, WA. Began his career as a resident house engineer at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, working with labels including Capitol, Columbia, and Def Jam/Island. Recent credits include audio work for Adam Ray's Dr. Phil Live tours, comedy specials for Jeremiah Watkins and Joe Dombrowski, Demetri Martin's upcoming Christmas comedy album, and the off-Broadway cast recording of Distant Thunder.

Jack Castellaw β€” Robust production background with high-level experience in Line Producing and Locations for Netflix, plus extensive independent and high-profile film and television work. Comprehensive skill set spanning pre-production through post, with a particular strength in screenwriting. Currently has a feature-length script under option and continues to write actively.

Brian Kahn β€” Television comedy writer, producer, and director with more than three decades of experience. Writing credits include Malcolm & Eddie, Duckman, Cousin Skeeter, 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, and Here and Now. Spent many years as Creative Director at FOX Entertainment, producing campaigns for many of the network's biggest shows. Now teaches comedy writing and filmmaking workshops rooted in professional TV writers' room techniques.

Josh Munds β€” Louisiana-based writer, director, and composer known for the dark comedy musical short Peeping Todd, which won a Founder's Circle Grant at the Louisiana Film Prize and premiered at FilmQuest 2025. Josh has a new feature in development and continues to build a body of work centered on genre-bending, irreverent comedy.

Meet Thomas Pell, the engineer behind our Atmos studio!

Twenty-plus years across music, comedy, film, and live performance. His career started at Seattle's Robert Lang Studios, and his recent credits include Adam Ray's Dr. Phil Live tours, Demetri Martin's Christmas comedy album, and the cast recording of the off-Broadway musical Distant Thunder.

On September 29, he'll be in the studio showing what the room can do. Bring your questions.

This course provides an overview of the role of the Script Supervisor in preproduction and during filming. By the end, you'll be able to better manage expectations on how a Script Supervisor can benefit any project.

Suggested for aspiring Script Supervisors, Editors, Directors, Assistant Directors, Screenwriters, or any crew position. A general understanding of film terminology is recommended before taking this class.

✨ Meet your instructor: Eve Butterly's script supervising credits include The Good Guys, The Chosen, Salem, Dusk Till Dawn, Prison Break, Dallas (2012), Queen of the South, 1883, Bass Reeves, and Landman. She has worked with directors such as Jonathan Frakes, Richard Linklater, Tim Matheson, Greg Nicotero, Peter Weller, Timothy Busfield, and Jennifer Lynch. In 2019, she directed the feature film Lily is Here and the short film 2Ships. Beyond her project work, Eve developed a digital script supervising program, has served on the boards of Women in Film/Dallas, Texas Association of Film/Tape Professionals, and Women in Communication, Inc./Dallas, and has presented on script supervising at KD College, UT Arlington, and SXSW. She is a card-carrying member of IATSE Local 484.

In this one-night workshop, you'll dig into the role of a production designer and discover how the world around your characters can be shaped to serve your story, whether that means selling a product, evoking a mood, or building out a character's inner life. Through real world examples and discussion, you'll learn practical tools for the golden rule of filmmaking: show, don't tell.

This class is a great fit for aspiring production designers, directors, producers, and anyone who wants to sharpen their visual storytelling.
