Struggling with trying to find that balance between self expression and branding? You are not alone.

There's a stage many solopreneurs go through where they are wanting to express who they are and what they are about in their content design style and they are confusing that with branding.

And I get it. I've been going through the same process myself. 😅
I've changed my aesthetic several times. The intention behind it is still fundamental to who I am, but recognizing that your inner world, your expressiveness is not actually your brand - is a challenging stage to go through.

You want to be authentic, real, expressive without "performing marketing" but also relay the experience you want your clients to feel. It's a really delicate balance with lots of nuance, strategy and self reflection.

And after months of working on it myself, I have come to a few conclusions.

Self expression is expansive and changes over time. Validating and showing who you are as a person - is not the same thing as showing your potential clients who you are as professional - even when they overlap.

Self expression is also about you. It's about wanting to be seen honestly and authentically. It's welcoming people into "your world" as you prefer to express it.

But it doesn't necessarily translate well in media because as humans, we are complex, nuanced and multifaceted. It's nearly impossible to capture "you" in one look (design style).

Branding is about conveying the message of what your business stands for, how you want your customers to experience you as a business owner and the services you provide. Often times, who we are as individuals, is far more multifaceted than who we are as professionals. There is usually very specific things you do naturally in how you interact with clients. And honestly, this is where I use archetypes to help identify those key elements.

I tend to ask my clients How do you want people to talk about your business and how do you want them to talk about you as the business owner vs as a person

This can help clarify how you truly want to be seen professionally. The self expression part, comes across in copy, in priorities, in little slips of humor and causes you support or campaigns you run over time. It's a bit more like giving people room to explore and breath while they discover who you are vs doing a full dump at one time. Very similar to how you slowly reveal aspects of yourself over time to new people you meet while you try and determine who stays as a friend vs who remains an acquaintance.

But the branding - that is the foundation of your core values, your core method of relating and translating what you do or provide. It is the place you stand firmly on that is the underlying substance to your business. Not to say you can't pivot from that place, expand or contract as time goes on - but the heart, the purpose is the root that you grow from.

And cementing what that root is... can take time.

Branding is the clarity you want clients to easily see; the benefits, the shared values, how you meet them. Self expression is a gradual reveal that can complement your branding - not overwhelm it.

Was AI intended to saturate every where we go or was it supposed to be something we choose?

Meta bought Manus and now it is sidelined in Facebook. And while I am in Google, I have Gemini both in Google and as my Android phone assistant - who i have never used, is just an "oops " swipe away from helping me.

Claude is hanging out Chrome - or do I have Gemini and Claude confused? At this point I have no idea. Windows updated with Co-pilot without me even wanting it. Thank goodness I am primarily a Mac user. Oh - but now the next Iphone is coming with AI...

Meanwhile I pretty much only use Chatgpt because I have a year investing in it knowing me and in me re-learning it every month or so. Thanks updates. 😅

Using AI as a tool, a partner to help you think, organize, create - whatever your jam is... requires a lot of fine tuning, adaptation and personalization. It's not like picking up any Phillips screwdriver to do a task. So having them everywhere feels a bit in my face and just extra noise and distraction. I know...just like a social media post I disagree with, I am free to ignore it.

But when is enough enough?

Or is this just me?

But they are so relieved when it all gets worked out!

Understanding how the nuances of colors, fonts, voice, and what we post all come together to create the image of our business is huge! But it can make your life so much easier!

What about you? Ever have that Omg! moment around your branding?

With the popularity of AI images is the counter....a strong human approach. With that, comes different design styles to really make that obvious, felt and resonated with.

This is just 3 of the growing design trends for 2026.

Using Shadow - to outline products so they feel more present vs a 2D flat object or using it to demonstrate contrast of shadow or blur shades of light.

Go Full Sensory - display emotion or a body detail (like tears, sweat, etc) in full detail, up close.

Have fun with bubble text, stickers, contrast of vintage with current tech, be chaotic or maximalist.

Do any of these resonate with how you would want to showcase your brand to support your message?

In 2025 I chose silence.

I tried to just post but I couldn't hear myself with all the shouting about AI, about all the should's and ought to's of different platform influencers.

So I chose silence over hype.
I didn't want to fake it. I didn't want auto generated one liners.

I wanted clarity.

I needed to hear my own voice -
before I could use it for anyone else's.

Now, when I speak, it's clear and it's mine.
Going into 2026, it may be slow, it may not be typical...but it's me talking to you.

How do you feel about posting political posts on your social media as a business/solopreneur/freelancer?

I know the rule is that we shouldn't post about politics or religion for fear of creating drama or turning off potential customers. While I completely understand that under most circumstances, are there exceptions to the rule?

We know that there are exceptions to the rule with religion right? If you are company known for your Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc support, then posting related material is accepted as part of your branding.

When it comes to politics, we need to tread far more carefully. Especially if you are a bigger corporation. The repercussions can be severely detrimental, especially if you have involvement in the candidates. However, for smaller businesses, the worse case will usually be related to our client and audience base.

On the other hand, we should be able to post about political events that we find concerning - especially during times that call for speaking out. There is a time that staying silent will be more costly.

So how can businesses or solopreneurs express political concern with the least amount of backlash while still having their voice heard?

1. Focus on the issue, not the candidate or the party.
2. Make sure you have fact checked and aren't spreading half truths or fake news.
3. Don't accuse followers of the opposite viewpoint of being stupid, ignorant, etc.
4. Try and keep it in alignment with your brand but with sincerity.
A woman's cosmetics company championing laws that could effect women as an example.
5. Don't post in such a way just to instigate others who may disagree. That may include how you choose your graphics, copy and of course the details.

In short, be mature, responsible and only do so if you feel called to speak out and can keep it honest and sincere.

Pre-registration for the Android release of Meta's video editing app, EDIT, is now available in the Google Play store!

You can go through your Instagram app in your profile menu. Scroll to the bottom and you will see menu item called Edits. This will give you a QR code or instantly register your device on Google Play to have Edits auto download upon it's release. Or just go into the Google Play store directly.

Is this a feature you are looking forward to or will you stick with whichever app ( we know it's Capcut 😅) you are currently using? Or maybe at least familiarize yourself with it as a backup? LMK below!

Low key updating you about this new update on Instagram, which I'm sure will make it's way to fb eventually.

But when I heard this news the first thing I thought was "Oh great! Now I can make my videos twice as long and people can just speed it up" 😄. Doesn't really work that way does it? But the timing is convenient with the allowance of 3 minute reels that came out last month - or February now since it's April 1st.

What are your thoughts? Is this a feature you will use or just meh..whatever? Lmk below.
