What if the goal isn't more work?

The landscaping industry is full of hardworking people.

After all, nobody succeeds in this business without putting in the effort.

But at some point, the conversation has to become bigger than simply “doing more.”

More projects, crews, revenue, and hours can absolutely support growth. But they can also create more complexity, more pressure, and more challenges if the business isn't prepared for them.

The companies pulling ahead today aren't necessarily working harder than everyone else.

They're building stronger systems.
They're developing better partnerships.
They're creating opportunities that support long-term profitability.
They're making intentional decisions about where they invest their time and energy.

Growth matters.
But building a stronger business matters even more.

Not all opportunities create the same value.

One project might generate revenue.

Another project might generate revenue, a referral relationship, portfolio-worthy work, and introductions that lead to future opportunities.

On paper, those projects can look similar. In reality, they're very different.

The most profitable companies I know don't evaluate opportunities based solely on the size of the contract. They evaluate the long-term value the opportunity creates for the business.

Does it strengthen relationships?
Does it open new doors?
Does it align with the type of work we want more of?
Does it support profitability?

Sometimes the best opportunity isn't the biggest one.
It's the one that creates leverage long after the project is complete.

For 20 years, the green industry has been showing up for military families in a meaningful way.

Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops program has connected more than 15,000 lawn and landscape professionals with over 20,000 military families nationwide, providing an estimated $20 million in donated lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal services.

As GreenCare for Troops Awareness Month kicks off this June, the organization is celebrating two decades of service while looking ahead to the future. New volunteer opportunities, expanded support for disabled veterans, and the “You Move, We Mow” Challenge are all designed to rally the industry around a simple mission: supporting those who serve.

The landscape industry does more than create and maintain outdoor spaces—it strengthens communities.
