Join us for an engaging virtual tour as we Zoom into the Feed Yards of West Texas! This interactive session will dive into the fascinating world of feed yards—what they are, how they operate, and why they’re a vital part of the beef production process. We’ll cover everything from cattle nutrition and health management to daily operations, backgrounding, and more. Whether you’re a student, industry professional, or just eager to learn, this is your chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at where it all comes together. Don’t miss it—there’s more to feed yards than meets the eye!

The New World Screwworm (NWS) is a devastating pest that can affect livestock, pets and wildlife. While it may sound alarming, staying informed and taking precautions can go a long way in protecting your animals. NWS larvae (maggots) can cause wounds by feeding on living tissue. It’s currently found in parts of Central and South America but has recently spread north into Mexico. Adult screwworm flies are about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger). They have orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along their backs. Awareness and prevention are key!

Keep an eye on your animals for signs like:
⚠️ Unusual behavior or head shaking
⚠️ Signs of irritation or bad odor
⚠️ Visible maggots in wounds

Easy Ways to Prevent NWS:
✅ Regularly check your animals, especially if you've traveled internationally
✅ Make sure pets and livestock crossing borders are properly inspected
✅ Be mindful when returning from NWS-affected areas

Our friends and partners at the Poarch Band of Creek Indians have a proud history of supporting youth in livestock. Each year, two young people from each of Alabama's 67 counties are awarded a scholarship from the Tribe to aid in future participation in youth livestock events during SLE Livestock Week. Congratulations to this year's scholarship recipients! 🤠
