AT 36 WEEKS PREGNANT, SHE WAS ABOUT TO CRY OVER A CUP OF COLD HOSPITAL COFFEE WHEN HER HUSBAND’S MISTRESS BURST INTO THE ROOM.
The coffee on the tray had already gone cold.
Valeria Salgado wrapped both hands around the paper cup anyway, trying to pull a little warmth from it while the steady beep of the monitor filled the hospital room. Outside the window, late afternoon light washed across the parking lot. Inside, everything felt gray.
At thirty-six weeks pregnant, exhausted, swollen, and carrying far more than a baby, she was trying not to think about her marriage.
Tomás had spent months explaining missed dinners, unanswered calls, and weekends that somehow turned into work emergencies.
For six years Valeria had built a life with him.
Six years of mortgage payments, family holidays, empty promises, and carefully rehearsed excuses.
Then she found the deleted messages.
That was when everything started making sense.
The sharp knock of the door hitting the wall shattered the silence.
Valeria jumped.
The hospital room door had flown open so hard it bounced back from the impact.
And standing there was Renata.
For a second Valeria wondered if she was hallucinating from lack of sleep.
She wasn't.
Renata walked into the room like she owned the entire floor. Her fitted white dress looked expensive. Her perfume arrived before she did. Her high heels clicked across the tile with the confidence of someone who believed she had already won.
Then she stopped beside the bed.
"So this is where he hid you."
Valeria slowly pushed herself upright, one hand resting protectively on her stomach.
"You need to leave."
Renata laughed.
Not a nervous laugh.
A cruel one.
"Leave? After everything you did?"
In another life, that accusation might have sounded ridiculous.
Valeria was the wife.
Valeria was the one who had spent six years building a future with Tomás.
Valeria was the woman carrying his child.
But Renata had not come to listen.
She had come to fight.
"Do you really think that baby makes you the winner?" she snapped as she moved closer to the bed. "Do you think getting pregnant means he'll stay with you?"
Valeria reached toward the hospital phone.
"I'm calling security."
Renata slapped the receiver away.
The phone crashed to the floor.
The sound echoed through the room.
Then she leaned forward.
"Tomás promised he'd leave you," she hissed. "He promised me a life together. Then suddenly you're pregnant. Convenient timing, don't you think?"
"Tomás lied to you too," Valeria said quietly. "That's not my fault."
Something changed in Renata's eyes.
Jealousy is dangerous.
Humiliation is worse.
"No," Renata said. "You trapped him."
The shove happened fast.
No dramatic warning.
No movie-style buildup.
Just a sudden burst of anger.
Valeria's back slammed against the raised hospital bed.
Pain shot through her lower abdomen.
Her breath vanished.
A second wave followed immediately.
Hotter.
Deeper.
More frightening.
Both hands flew to her belly.
"Stop!"
For the first time, Renata looked uncertain.
Only for a second.
But it was already too late.
The monitors began beeping faster.
Fear climbed into Valeria's throat.
Then the door opened again.
A nurse rushed in.
Behind her came Elena, Valeria's mother.
And behind Elena walked a silver-haired man in a navy suit.
He took one look at his daughter doubled over in pain.
Then he looked at Renata.
The room seemed to get colder.
"What did you do to my daughter?"
His voice was calm.
Which somehow made it worse.
Renata blinked.
"Your... daughter?"
The man took a step forward.
"Valeria Salgado is my daughter."
The color drained from Renata's face.
"Wait... Arturo Salgado?"
The same Arturo Salgado whose name appeared on buildings across the city.
The same businessman who funded entire hospital wings.
The same man Tomás had been desperately trying to impress for months in hopes of securing a life-changing business deal.
Renata actually stepped backward.
For the first time since entering the room, she looked afraid.
And at that exact moment, Valeria felt something warm spread beneath her.
Her eyes widened.
She looked down.
Then toward her mother.
"Mom..."
The hospital gown was suddenly soaked.
And for the first time, Renata's confidence disappeared.
Because everyone in that room realized exactly what had just happened...
