Attended a book signing last night in The East Room at The Richard Nixon Presidential Library. The book ā€œTargeted Beirutā€ is the newly release non-fiction by Jack Carr and James Scott. This book signing was different. It started with military colors and the star spangled banner.

Reading is one of my vices so read, and listen, to a tremendous amount of business related stuff. In an episode of MFM interviewed Jack Carr author of the fiction book The Termimalist. Having enjoyed the interview bought the 1st book and finished it in one sitting.

ā€œTargeted Beirutā€ is a non-fiction tomb of history. The authors during the book signing fireside chat walked the audience back to those treacherous days in 1983. They tell stories not of their own but that of the soldiers and officers in that place and during that precarious time.

The authors describe the time in the story as ā€˜the dawn of terrorism’ in the Middle East. The research they conduct is cooperating access to the Navy and Marine Corp archives corroborating authenticity. They personally conduct and use 100+ hours of soldier interviews and review 600+ letters sent home by solders to help build the story..

The authors talked about the correlation of the Beirut of today to that in 1983. They tell us the story of hearing an officer on the ground that fateful day ā€˜imploring politicians to use this catastrophic event to learn’ ā€œbefore terrorists fly a plane into a buildingā€.

Jarringly 18 years later 9/11 occurred. While I’ve not started the book you can bet your bottom dollar I will greatly enjoy reading my signed copy!

On our last day in EspaƱol we arrived mid afternoon in Sitges a walkable City of cobblestone streets. Sitges is ā€œtheā€ place for Barcelonian’s to escape out of the City. Similar in ways to Santa Barbara, Carmel, or maybe Martha’s Vineyard or the Hampton’s on the east coast.

A word on parking in Spain, it’s a pain in the butt and we found it nearly impossible to find parking in many of the congested areas in Spanish cities…

Lost, again while trying to find a place to park and have a drink while trying to book a hotel room for the night, we found parking near a promontory overlooking a beach alongside a jetty separating it from a marina.

Hiking down the trail towards the beach we ventured upon a sight, yeah I guess that’s an appropriate description. See that smile on my wife’s face in the first pic, well she’s smiling because we’re perched right over a fully n**e beach. One of two I’ve since learned in Sitges. And just incase you are wondering we did not venture down to the beach though in all earnestness we talked about it, just stripping down and entering the water, and maybe would have had the hour been earlier and the beach goers all clothed as we walked back by latter that afternoon. You know, when in Rome!

If ever in Barcelona Sitges should be on your list; bathing suits are optional 😊

With a couple of days to spare after the unexpected change in travel plans we decided to rent a car and drive the ~200Km from Girona to the seaside resort town of Sitges just south of Barcelona.

The drive towards the coast from Girona lead us through the mountainous terrain of northern Spain. The area is reminiscent of many areas in Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Lost, we thought it a good excuse to grab a glass of Cava before siesta time set in and found a seaside cafe in Platja Gran de Palomos a bit before their afternoon siesta break.

The Cava and beer were refreshing and the tapas filling. Interestingly the server was very friendly and told us a little about his hometown. He also made sure to mention his pleasure we ended up in his town in Spain instead of France since the northern Spaniards and French still have a thing; something I was unaware of until our conversation.

Drinks had, we weaved and wondered our way down the coast into the belly of Barcelona and she spit us out onto the curveous coastline road I’ve ever driven. This road makes the Sacramento to Lake Tahoe drive seem tame, it was crazy fun in the Volvo SUV we were driving.

Though the trip took the better part of a day it took us through various terrains from walkable cobble stone streets into the mountains and on to the beautiful shores of the Mediterranean. The time was well worth the sights and scenery. A good day!

Finally had a chance to spend sometime with our son and his new friend Bea after they missed a connecting train in Madrid in their efforts to get from Santiago to Valencia. He relented to renting a car and drove from Madrid to Valencia to make connecting flights to Majorca.

Spent the evening hearing stories of their many hilarious adventures walking the Camino de Santiago

Today had the privilege of observing a master of Paella make his specialty. Toni cooks his paella using fresh ingredients grown on his farm where he serves his specialty Paella. The protein that makes the paella so special is a combination free roam chick, rabbit, and snail. World renowned for his paella, as well as special guest spots on Master Chef as well as other TV cooking shows, Toni is passionate about his paella and was ever the gentleman and host. Oh, and every detail from the tapas to the main dish of paella was absolutely suburb.
