Patients today have more access to information than ever before but knowing where to look can change everything.

In Episode 86 of All Talk Oncology, Dr. Shruti Patel highlights a powerful but often underused tool: ClinicalTrials.gov.

It’s not just a database. It’s a way for patients to understand what studies are available, where they’re happening, and what options might exist beyond their immediate care setting.

From major centers like UCSF, UC Davis, UCLA, and City of Hope to institutions across the country like MD Anderson, clinical trials can open doors that patients may not even realize are available to them.

But beyond the tool itself, the deeper message is this: patients should feel empowered to ask questions, seek second opinions, and advocate for the best possible care.

Because no single physician has all the answers and cancer care often benefits from more than one perspective.

This isn’t about replacing trust in your doctor. It’s about expanding what’s possible within your care journey.

Some lessons arrive gently.
Others change the way you see everything.

For many people facing cancer, there comes a moment when they realize how precious time truly is. The pressure to please everyone, meet every expectation, or follow someone else's version of success starts to fade.

What becomes important is spending time with the people you love, pursuing what brings meaning, and creating a life that feels authentic to you.

Because when life reminds you that nothing is guaranteed, you stop asking for permission to be yourself.

You begin choosing what matters, protecting your peace, and living in a way that reflects your values.. not someone else's expectations.
And that might be one of the most powerful lessons of all.

There’s a question that comes up in almost every clinic conversation:
“Did I do something to cause this?”

In Episode 86 of All Talk Oncology, Dr. Shruti Patel addresses this directly and carefully challenges a belief many patients carry quietly.
Because even when someone has done everything “right” eaten clean, exercised, avoided alcohol, lived what’s often labeled a healthy life.. cancer can still happen.

And when it does, the mind naturally looks for an explanation. A reason. A mistake to point to.

But biologically, cancer is not that simple.
At its core, cancer arises from mutations in cells changes that occur constantly in the body. Most are repaired or cleared by the immune system. Sometimes, some escape that process. That’s where cancer begins.

Lifestyle can influence risk, yes but it is not the sole cause, and it is never the full story.

This distinction matters, especially in how we speak to patients and to ourselves.

There is so much pressure to be strong all the time.
To keep smiling.
To stay positive.
To have the right words.
To carry everything gracefully.

But the truth is, some of the brightest lights are the ones that keep going even when they're struggling.

You don't have to have it all together to inspire someone. You don't have to be fearless to be brave. And you don't have to be perfect to make a difference.

Your presence matters. Your story matters. Your effort matters.

Even on the days when you're tired, uncertain, or simply doing your best to get through the day, you may be giving someone else the hope they need.

Just showing up as yourself is more powerful than you realize. đź’›

We’re seeing a shift in cancer patterns that’s hard to ignore.
More people are being diagnosed younger and the story isn’t as simple as it used to be.

In Episode 86 of All Talk Oncology, Dr. Shruti Patel talks about a concerning trend GI oncologists are now facing: a generational rise in colorectal cancer risk, where younger birth cohorts appear to carry significantly higher risk than previous generations.

Even more troubling, this isn’t just about increased detection. It’s happening alongside outcomes that aren’t improving at the same pace as other cancers.

And while most cases still occur in older adults, the rise in younger populations is forcing medicine to re-examine everything we thought we understood about risk, screening, and prevention.

What’s driving this shift? That’s still being investigated but it’s a question the medical community can no longer ignore.

What’s behind the rise in colorectal cancer among younger adults?

In Episode 87 of All Talk Oncology, Kenny Perkins sits down with Dr. Shruti Patel, GI Medical Oncologist at Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, for an important conversation about one of the most concerning trends in cancer care today: early-onset gastrointestinal cancers.

Together, We discuss:
Why more younger adults are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer
What researchers currently know and still don't know about the causes
The truth about lifestyle factors, risk, and patient guilt
How clinical trials work and why patients should explore their options
The importance of self-advocacy and second opinions
What survivorship really looks like beyond treatment

This episode is a powerful reminder that cancer is complex, and no one should carry blame for their diagnosis.

We often hear lifestyle advice framed like rules that can “prevent everything.”

But what gets lost is nuance.
Not every risk factor is a verdict. Not every study is a blame story. And not every diagnosis can be traced back to something a person did or didn’t do.

In Episode 86 of All Talk Oncology, Dr. Shruti Patel breaks down how lifestyle research.. meant to guide us but can sometimes be misinterpreted in ways that quietly shift responsibility onto patients. When that happens, science stops being supportive and starts feeling like guilt.

Yes, diet, movement, sleep, and habits matter. But the truth is far more complex than “if you did everything right, nothing would happen.”
This conversation is a reminder: health education should empower, not accuse.

Episode 86 drops Monday, June 15. Stay tuned.

There are moments in life that quietly reset everything.

After facing something as life-altering as cancer, priorities don’t just change they sharpen. Time feels more honest. Energy becomes something you protect, not waste. And suddenly, anything that doesn’t add meaning starts to feel too heavy to carry.

What used to be tolerated gets questioned. What used to be postponed gets chosen. Life becomes less about obligation and more about aliveness.

And in that shift, there’s a kind of clarity that can be both painful and freeing at the same time.

You stop living to get through the days and start choosing the days that feel worth living. đź’›

Through the years, we’ve sat with voices from all over the world.. Oncologists, researchers, survivors, advocates, and even well-known public figures who chose to turn their pain, purpose, and experience into something that could help someone else breathe a little easier.

Different stories. Different diagnoses. Different battles.

But one truth kept coming back to us again and again:

No one should have to go through this alone.

Behind every testimony is a human being who kept going through fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and hope that didn’t always show up on the same day. And yet.. they still chose to speak. To share. To remind someone, somewhere, that courage doesn’t always look loud.. sometimes it’s just showing up one more time.

This reel is not just a collection of guests.

It’s a reminder of every hand held in silence.
Every question asked in the dark.
Every moment someone thought they wouldn’t make it.. but did.

If you are here right now, listening, reading, or watching. This space was built with you in mind.

Because healing may be personal, but you were never meant to carry it alone.

We’re in this together.

Not every day looks like strength, and not every silence means distance.

Living with cancer often comes with layers people don’t always see.. fatigue that can change in minutes, conversations that feel heavy even when they’re well-meant, and a deep need to still be seen as a person beyond the illness.

Sometimes what matters most isn’t the right words, but the willingness to stay present, listen, and understand that healing doesn’t look the same every day.

A little gentleness goes a long way. đź’›
