Join me in my tiny but magical studio at the very bottom of the world, on the tippy top of the South Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand. I’m Fleur Woods, a contemporary fiber artist, author, and teacher. Since I moved my studio into my home in 2020, I have loved working from here while balancing it with parenting two amazing teenagers and traveling to teach workshops. Connected to our garden, with views down our little rural valley, my studio is my grounding space.

When people walk into my studio, they often remark on how warm and layered it feels — that’s intentional. Over the years, I’ve learned that you can curate creative energy no matter where you live or what you have to work with. You don’t need the perfect house or the biggest room. You just need to look at what’s available and ask yourself, how can I make this mine?

I’ve shaped my space piece by piece — an antique crate here, a rescued library cabinet there — until it became a place that reflects who I am and what I love. Even when my studio was just a corner off the kitchen, I tried to infuse it with intention so it would feel like a little sanctuary waiting for me whenever I had a moment to create. — Kristi Baker

“The most important piece of furniture in my studio is the central island, used for glass cutting, soldering, cleaning, polishing, and all the processes in between. It’s where I construct most of my fused pieces before they go into the kiln (some have to be built directly inside the kiln). The table gets fairly battered with burns, chemicals, and water spills, but a couple of coats of paint every six months keep it looking halfway respectable. It also stores my glass for both fused and stained glass projects.” — Pamela Angus.

I’m deeply influenced by spaces or locations, so for years I would seek different spaces where I could get my creative juices flowing. I would go sit in a garden, sit in my grandma’s room, or even book a hotel and travel. But a couple years ago, after getting married and moving into my “forever home,” I decided I needed a space to call my own — a single room where everything I love exists together: my books, my workspace, my reading corner, and, of course, the antiques I’ve collected. — Noha Badaw
