Some artists see an old chair.
🤖Julia Kachanova sees the beginning of a robot.

Weathered wood, rusty bolts, vintage tins, old watch mechanisms, and metal shoe-heel plates from the 1950s fill her workshop — not as forgotten objects, but as pieces waiting for their next story.

Julia’s tiny robots are now made almost entirely from vintage and reclaimed materials. For her, their imperfections and histories are precisely what give the finished characters their soul.

Even her workshop embodies that philosophy. During construction, a living plum tree stood within its footprint. Rather than remove it, Julia simply built the studio around it. Inside, vintage objects mingle with natural materials, sunlight pours through large windows, and shelves hold the curious collections that will eventually become future robots.

For years, Sarah Manolescue thought that because she painted plein air, she no longer needed a studio.

Then she realized what she was missing wasn’t simply a place to store her supplies.

It was a space for contemplation.

Nestled among the trees at the bottom of her garden, Sarah’s small studio is entirely her own — a place to paint, display her work, surround herself with meaningful objects, and leave the distractions of the house behind.

Sarah’s creative journey is equally inspiring. A self-taught artist who once felt embarrassed that she hadn’t attended art school, she now looks at the 20 years she has devoted to developing her artistic voice and feels comfortable taking up her space in the art world.

Her advice to other artists?
“Carve out a space, no matter how small. A corner of a room will do. Make it yours and make it work hard for you.”

Nothing in Magdalena Modrić’s studio stays still for long.

Located in Pelješac, Croatia, her workspace is part studio, part storage space, part workshop — and at times, part museum. One section currently houses pieces from her “Archive of Unverified Objects” arranged almost as though they’re already on exhibition, while elsewhere the active work of sculpting carries on amid materials and tools.

The wonderfully layered space reflects Magdalena’s artistic practice. Inspired by history, archaeology, and mythology, she uses an archaeological lens to explore contemporary human behavior, identity, personal space, and the stories we accept as truth.

People sign up for Amanda Bartel’s classes because they want to learn pottery.

But that isn’t always why they stay.

Over the years, Amanda has watched her College Station, Texas, studio become a place where people work through life while working with clay — expressing themselves creatively, forming friendships, and celebrating one another’s growth.
