A rare find. A mobile mechanic who won’t cause you to take out a second mortgage. This young man is the best, especially since most mechanic shops are gone since the Lahaina fire.

The Legend of 'Stingy Jack' and The Jack ‘O Lantern

People have been making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. One version of the practice may have originated from an Irish legend—which first appeared in print in the 19th century—about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with it ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

Jack O’Lanterns Origin
In Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits. In England, large beets are used. Immigrants from these countries brought their vegetable-carving traditions with them when they came to the United States, helping change American pumpkin-carving from a general autumn pasttime to one uniquely associated with Halloween.

One of the main reasons I bought a “vintage” Macintosh Performa 200 was to prove to myself, that after 30 years, that I could produce a new magazine using this little machine.

What a blast it’s been 😊

I’ve lived in every decade
By Philip Scott Wikel

I’ve lived in every decade
As far it goes back:
I was there at the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
I did the jitterbug
I signed the Declaration of Independence
And drank Vodka with Dostoevsky

I smoked o***m with Coleridge
And he wrote a line for me
While William Tell
Shot an apple off my head and
Billy Blake wrote The Songs of Innocence
Milton proclaimed that the fall from grace
Was Adams fault

At the cavern in Liverpool
I was the sound man for The Beatles
And rocked the Casbah with The Clash

In Paris I had coffee with Picasso, Vincent and
Franco, who started a revolution high on caffeine
and I snorted coke and drank whiskey with
Charles Bukowski

I stormed the Bastille
did time with Al Capone
ran with John Dillinger
And did shots with Bonnie and Clyde

In China I hung with Mao
prayed with the Dalai Lama
And learned that we are all eternal

I sailed with Kamehameha
And joined in killing Cook
a day later
I Watched Hi**er run into a bunker

I was a prisoner of war in Vietnam
And watched my children die.
Then woke up to the sound of The Zombies singing
“The Time of The Season”
and made love to Marie Antoinette

In Greece I was a sculptor
Or, really, just a laborer,
And helped with the Parthenon
While moonlighting on the Pyramids.

In 1941 I watched the planes over Pearl Harbor
Then helped Don McLean write “American Pie”
While listening to Mozart in Vienna

Later that day
I went on the road with Jack Kerouac and drank wine
With Neal Cassidy and Allen Ginsburg
Allen started to howl so

I went off to the Yukon and panned for Gold,
missed the Rush in California.
Waking up to Reagan being shot while
A Flock of Seagulls
Ran “So Far Away”

Ive lived in every decade
I bunked with Elvis and held Buddy Holly’s hand as he died

In 1929 I watched the market crash
And jumped out of a window and
Made a soft landing
Only to end up in a Hooverville shooting craps
With Buster Brown

Julius Caesar confided in me
And then I conspired to kill him all along
Making love to Helen and sailing to troy

In San Francisco I watched the city burn while
Placing bets on Secretariat
And played bass for The Rolling Stones
Playing RubyTuesday
And I went home hopeful

I fought for The North in The Civil War
And watched Lincoln get shot
Then tuned into Walter Cronkite announcing Kennedy’s death
MLK, RFK, and Malcolm X all
Died while I jammed with the Doors

Ive lived in every decade
As far as you can think back
I was there at the dawning of the Age of Aquarius

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
And John Lennon
Would’ve been 84 this year

Bono says “You glorify the past when the future dries up”
And I agree sometimes
When I’m not thinking about
All of the family I’ve lost

Tomorrow is the future
And I can only hope that I’ll be living in every decade
“From Here To Eternity…”
This is just the abridged version
