THAT’S US. The shadow on the moon is called the umbra and it’s the Earth’s shadow!!! There’s also the penumbra, which is the edges of Earth’s shadow. The penumbra starts hitting the moon early and isn’t always easily visible to the naked eye. But, as the Earth moves between the sun and moon we block more and more. The Earth is so big that when the majority of the moon is covered by our shadow it turns that dark red color. The red is the same thing that causes the moon to be orange near the horizon — our atmosphere! The long waves of red light make it through the air more easily, scattering the least. That red light is what we’re gonna see later tonight falling on the moon …. So so so far away in dark space.

Went to the Grand Canyon last week for a PBS shoot! It’s the 50th anniversary of the show this year. So I pitched to South Florida PBS that we get out in the world and show people how much fun you can have stargazing. What a BREATHTAKING first stop!!! Thanks so much to the GrandCanyonNPS (especially Rader who hooked us up, and Emma who agreed to let us film her for a quick bit of b-roll with no sound but then let me ask so many questions because I’m a huge nerd and no one will ever hear her thoughtful and fantastic answers).
