Am I wrong for making my dad cry and telling him my stepdad is the only real father I have? Half my family is calling me a cruel daughter for intentionally excluding my own flesh and blood from my fifteenth birthday dinner. My older sister is flooding my phone with angry messages, calling me a heartless jerk for tearing our relatives apart. I know exactly how bad it looks from the outside. A teenager lashing out at her divorced dad and purposely leaving him off a special guest list sounds like typical, petty rebellion. He even threatened my mom with court over parental alienation. But there are two major things my dad and sister conveniently leave out when they play the victim online. They never mention the twisted rule he forced on me regarding my actual birth date just to please his favorite child. They also hide what he chose to do on the night of my school dance six years ago. Those suppressed memories still make my chest feel tight and heavy every time I look at him. I can still hear the sharp click of the phone hanging up echoing in the dark room.
