LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY! 🔥🔥🔥
Austin Nelson (‘21) is preparing to complete his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Texas Tech University in May 2027.
A graduate of Sulphur High School, Austin earned his B.S. in Mathematical Sciences in 2021, taking many of his elective courses in Computer Science.
This month, Austin is finishing up subcontracted work in a collaborative project involving Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. He plans to spend his final year as an intern at one of these national labs.
Put as simply as possible, he develops advanced mathematical algorithms that allow supercomputers to simulate the behavior of plasmas. He has been working on ways to compress extremely high-dimensional plasma calculations. 🤯
Well beyond the simplistic view of applied math as “using calculus to model something”, Austin’s work sits at the intersection of linear algebra, numerical analysis, differential equations, approximation theory, scientific computing, and plasma physics.
Whoa! That’s heavy, Doc.
We are so proud of you, Austin, and all that you’ve accomplished in just 5 years since graduating from the McNeese Department of Mathematical Sciences! Who knows, maybe next you’ll build a real Delorean time machine.
