A previously unknown composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, likely written during his early teenage years, has been uncovered at a German library. The piece, dating from the mid to late 1760s, consists of seven miniature movements for a string trio, lasting around 12 minutes, according to a statement from Leipzig municipal libraries.

Though Mozart was a renowned child prodigy, composing from a very young age under his father’s guidance, this work was discovered in a copy made around 1780, rather than in Mozart’s own handwriting. The discovery was made during the compilation of the latest edition of the Köchel catalogue, which archives Mozart's works.

The piece was performed by a string trio during the unveiling of the new Köchel catalogue in Salzburg and will have its German premiere at the Leipzig Opera on Saturday.
