DAKOTA by Gilbert Ralston
The first novel in the acclaimed Dakota series, back in print for the first time in nearly fifty years.

"I absolutely love this character. In a lot of ways Dakota is the perfect merger of Craig Johnson’s dedicated sheriff Longmire and his loyal friend Henry Standing Bear." —Paperback Warrior

Dakota is a half Piegan, half Shoshoni Native American who served as a Marine in Vietnam and afterwards became a cop in New York City. Now he’s moved back to the Sierras to work his family’s ranch, ride the rodeo circuit, and take on cases as a private detective.

Dakota’s old friend Sam Law, a local shopkeeper, asks him to help a woman who believes that her husband was murdered in a Nevada mining town… and that those same killers are now targeting her. Minutes later, Sam and the woman are killed by a car bomb. Dakota won’t stop until he gets justice for the dead… and exposes the secret that three people were brutally slain to protect…even if it could cost him his own life.

Actor and politician Ben Jones aka "Cooter" died today. I never met the man face-to-face -- but we spoke on the phone and shared lots of emails over the years. He was a good friend of the late Ralph Dennis, and was very helpful to me in meeting the author's other surviving friends and tracking down his lost manuscripts. Ben also kindly wrote an introduction to one of The Hardman Novels that we republished. Ben's affection for Ralph, was still palpable. He lamented he wasn't able to help Ralph overcome his demons...in the same way that he'd overcome his own. For years, Ben tried to sell "Gunnerson," TV series that he & Ralph created, and that he would star in, but Ben was too typecast as "Cooter" to get it going. The last time we exchanged emails it was on July 4, 2023, when I let Ben know I'd finally tracked down Ralph's long-lost manuscript "Wind Sprints" and sent him a copy. Ben wrote: "Hey Lee,

Happy Fourth of July!

I think Ralph started that manuscript in Chapel Hill and continued to work on it after his move to Atlanta in 1970, as I recall. He stayed with me for a few weeks until he found that apartment on Brookridge, where he lived in the early 70's, a nice little
space above a garage in a neighborhood called Druid Hills. Then, when he sold the first Hardman, it went unmentioned for a few years.

I'm still rummaging around for the "Gunnarson" pieces we worked in the late 70's and into the 80's, when I was commuting from Atlanta to L.A. for the "Dukes"...

All is well in the Blue Ridge. And I hope all is well with you and yours,

Ben Jones"

Actor Ben Jones, best known for playing trusty mechanic Cooter Davenport in the hit TV comedy “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died at age 84.

New Episode: In this new collaboration with Nick from , Paperback Warrior explores MISTRESS OF ORION HALL, a haunting 1970 gothic-suspense paperback published by Fawcett Gold Medal. Along the way, the episode traces the remarkable career of John Messmann, examining his work across westerns, spy fiction, and action novels, as well as the gothic romances he wrote under the pseudonym Claudette Nicole. The discussion also highlights the recent revival of Messmann's fiction through new editions from Books and Edge Books, making this an ideal introduction to one of paperback fiction's most versatile and overlooked authors. Black Hats by Max Allan Collins

Legendary lawman Wyatt Earp straps on his six-shooter to battle a new breed of bad man in a new land — rising gangster Al Capone and his machine-gun toting killers on the streets of New York City.

It’s the 1920s, the glittering jazz age, and the beginning of the blood-soaked prohibition-era. The wild west and the gunfight at the OK Corral are fading memories, even for aging lawman Wyatt Earp, who is toiling in Los Angeles as a private eye and a technical consultant on cowboy movies. When Doc Holliday’s son, who is running a glitzy nightclub in Manhattan, is targeted by the mob, Wyatt gladly leaves the tamed west for the wild east to defend him, pitting himself against a brutal, young gangster named Al Capone…

Kane was a top CIA assassin until he suffered traumatic physical and psychological injuries in a mission that went horribly wrong. The Agency wiped his memory, gave him a new identity, and retired him to a life of mundane, anonymous domesticity. But his training, and his talent for killing, came back with a vengeance. He created a new life for himself as a killer-for-hire, righting wrongs for people who can’t find peace or justice any other way. He doesn’t know that his memories are fiction, or that he is always being watched, or that he’s been targeted for death by a rogue faction within the Agency.

In A TALENT FOR KILLING, a brutal, fast-moving thriller from Ralph Dennis, the author of the legendary Hardman series of crime novels, Kane finds himself caught between the mob, Cuban revolutionaries, and his own government as he seeks retribution for a man murdered for uncovering small-town corruption…and justice for another man on death row, falsely convicted of ra**ng and murdering a child.
