Feeling stuck in your recovery? Plateaus in physical therapy are common and often indicate that something in the treatment plan needs to change.
Here are four ways to overcome a plateaus in your progress:
⭐️It is time for a re-evaluation! As physical therapists our job is to make a best guess estimate of what the driver of your symptoms are as quick as possible, but sometimes our initial theory is wrong. As we get to know you, gather information over time, and see how your body responds to treatment we make updates on what we think is driving your symptoms and update the treatment plan accordingly. If you’re not feeling better, it may be time for us to make some adjustments!
⭐️ Physical therapy alone may not fully resolve your symptoms. You may benefit from other medical interventions in conjunction with PT. Your physical therapist can help you figure out who else to add to your care team. Some examples of interventions specific to pelvic health that could be helpful are Botox injections, muscle relaxers, and hormonal creams.
⭐️Identify and overcome barriers you may be experiencing with getting the most out of your current plan of care. Sometimes it isn’t the treatment that needs to change, but the way it’s being delivered and received. Your sessions should always feel collaborative. If something feels confusing, overwhelming, not doable, etc. let your therapist know. Vocalize any and all questions or concerns you may have with your therapist.
⭐️ Your body might be ready for a new challenge and could benefit from a progression in your rehabilitation program. That could look like an increase in time, duration, load, etc.
Remember, communication with your PT is key! Don’t get discouraged by plateaus - work together to brainstorm solutions to reach your goals!
