🐘 How well do you know the Zoo's elephants?🤔
Spike, the Zoo's only bull, is easy to spot with his large tusks, but identifying the five females can be a little trickier. Here are a few tips:
1️⃣ Nhi Linh (left most in the first photo) is one of the smaller females and the youngest in the herd. She is typically with her mother, Trong Nhi, and often plays with enrichment items.
2️⃣ Trong Nhi (right most in the first photo) is Nhi Linh's mother. Her right ear folds forward at the top and has a pale pink stripe running across it.
3️⃣ Bozie (second photo) is a paler gray than the rest of the herd. Born in the wild, Bozie was orphaned and rescued by an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka. The two domes on her head are large, and she has a pink streak through the middle of her right ear.
4️⃣ Swarna (third photo) was also orphaned and lived in the same orphanage as Bozie for a time. She later lived in Calgary, Canada, with Maharani, before arriving in D.C. in May 2014. Swarna is somewhat easier to spot, with pale polka-dotted stripes running along the outer edges of her ears.
5️⃣ Maharani, or "Rani" (fourth photo) stands out as she is one of the tallest elephants in the herd. With long legs and long tail hairs, Rani can often be seen flapping her ears when excited.
