A note from Rhiannon, our LOCALadk Editor:

Dear friends,

You may have noticed that this year's summer issue has yet to come out. We are happy to announce that our magazines have been delivered to us today, and they will be distributed to our regions throughout the next week.

We apologize for such a delay in getting this issue into your hands.

As some of you know, LOCALadk is primarily a two-person team -- myself and Eric, my husband and LOCALadk 's creative design director. Over the last two months, we were hit with a tragedy. We experienced finding out we were pregnant with our first child only to then lose our pregnancy from a miscarriage. It is a loss so many have been through, including many of our readers. Like so many, it took us some time to regroup and find our feet again. That said, we were instantly surrounded by love, support, and care and were reminded of just how incredible our local communities are throughout the Adirondacks.

Putting the final touches on this issue for you helped us find a sense of purpose and healing, and we are incredibly proud of the issue we've put together. This summer's magazine was met with significant challenges beyond our personal circumstances (more on that soon), making its existence that much more special to us. It is one we will forever look back in with fondness, even with all of the complications surrounding it.

We thank you for your patience, we thank you for your support, and we thank you for your readership. We hope you enjoy this issue, and we look forward to seeing you in September for our fall issue.

Warmly,
Rhiannon and Eric Adsit

Have you taken a summer trip away from the Adirondacks that made your friends say, "Dang, that's NEAT!"? Found yourself as a stranger in a strange land? Maybe ended up a creek without a paddle or thru-hiking in a place that almost made you think, "this is even nicer than the Adirondacks!"?

Ok, we know that last one would never happen, but if you've been on a summer trip away from the Adirondacks that you think was "epic" in some way and you have photos from the trip, we want to hear from you! Please send pitches with approximate word counts to [email protected] to be considered for this summer's "Epic Journey" article by May 29.

Word of the day: Sastrugi
From the Russian word for "small ridges," Sastrugi refers to wind-eroded snow features that resemble sand dunes and create wavy textures. With the high winds from this latest storm, keep your eyes peeled for these wild piles of snow!

We are holding so many in our hearts as we collectively mourn the loss of Robbi Mecus. Robbi was a force of strength, love, resolve, and hope within our tight-knot community and beyond. She was seemingly everything all at once: climber, conservationist, ranger, traveler, parent, friend, ally, and mentor.

Robbi's career as a forest ranger with the NYS DEC for over twenty-five years is one of the many marks she left in our community, earning the respect of fellow rangers and outdoor enthusiasts seemingly everywhere she went. Our magazine's co-founder, Anne Brewer, perhaps put it best when she stated, "I always said...if I'm ever in need of a rescue, make sure Robbi is there."

A proud trans woman, Robbi gave hope and visibility to many, remaining a proud role model, mentor, and ally to the LGBTQIA+ community throughout her life. Between this, her dedication to serving others, and her infinite love of the outdoors and everyone she met, Robbi's heart was greater than the mountains, and we grieve her today and the days to come.

We send our greatest hopes for healing and recovery to Robbi's climbing partner, Melissa Orzechowski, who is currently at a hospital in Anchorage receiving treatment for the severe injuries she sustained. Melissa, we are with you in every way.
