At the annual meeting of the Louisiana Press Association in Baton Rouge today, our paper brought home four first place prizes for our work last year, including first in General Excellence, and two third place. Billy Coleman received the Sam Hanna Award for best regular column. We are so proud of him, know what this would have meant to him, and would give a lot to have seen him accept it himself. East Carroll Parish is on year two of a three-year ban on wild turkey hunting due to low numbers up and down the Mississippi River, and there is little reason to believe numbers will recover when the ban is lifted.

Lake Providence Levee Festival was a third year success, a gathering and celebration of all things East Carroll, put on by local nonprofit Doorway to Louisiana.

Tucked into the base of the levee where Lake Street dead ends, more than 500 people – from Little Rock, California, Shreveport, New Orleans and right here in East Carroll parish – came out to enjoy and celebrate the life and vibrancy of our downtown.
