Whether you're a first generation homeschooler or a seasoned homeschooling veteran, it's always helpful to keep the principles of a life-giving homeschool fresh in our minds.

While it can be tempting to recreate a classroom at home, the beauty of homeschool is that we don't have to follow the school model at all. Learning can be a way of life that extends into any subject area.

We can tailor our child's education to suit their strengths, build up their weak areas, and support their growing interests. We don't have to rush, but can follow the individual pace of each student. We can build skills incrementally to reinforce each concept as we go along, and we can repeat lessons without shame to allow a student to feel more confident with challenging skills. We also have permission to let an eager student progress at a quicker rate and cover as much ground as they like.

The Foundational Phonics series was created with all of this in mind. Each book in the series offers your child a logical, organized approach to reading instruction while providing them with a variety of multi-sensory activities to learn and reinforce each concept. Skills build incrementally to help them achieve and sustain confidence in reading fluency and give them all the tools they need to become lifelong learners. With Foundational Phonics, learning to read can be structured, yet flexible, providing both student and mother-teacher with all they need for reading success.

Frequently Asked Question: “How can I ensure that my child will become a good reader?”

Helping a child become a confident and fluent reader really begins with you, the mother-teacher. One of the best motivations you can provide for your child to love reading is to be a reader yourself. Read around them--everything from the grocery list to recipes to your personal books--and demonstrate how reading naturally fits into your life.

Begin reading aloud for fun as soon as your child is able to sit in your lap for a few minutes at a time without wiggling to get down. Choose books with interesting illustrations, funny sounds or words, letters of the alphabet, animals, or bright colors. Sit with your child and point out what you see. Then ask them to find things like the yellow duck, the letter H, or the big red barn. Let your child pretend to read to you when they show interest. Model how to properly interact with books, and teach your children to treat books gently, like treasured possessions.

Once your child shows a readiness to read, the Foundational Phonics series provides all that you need to make teaching your child to read simple, efficient, and enjoyable. The full series takes a child from learning to read their first word to fluently reading over three thousand words. Everything is taught in a gentle, yet systematic manner with a multi-sensory focus that makes learning fun and sets your child on the path to becoming a lifelong learner who possesses the ability to teach themselves almost anything.

Homeschooling can provide both freedom and flexibility in a child's education. It allows the mother-teacher to take an individualized approach to teaching and learning outside of the one-size-fits-all model used in a classroom setting. It also gives you the unique ability to cater to your children's specific needs and learning styles because you know and care about them more than anyone else.

Life can often be overwhelming and it is easy to feel that if you don't do “school” just right, you will permanently damage your child's education and future. However, one of the biggest ways you can help your child succeed is to let go of the regimented expectations of the classroom and focus on making learning a way of life.

Routines and rhythms can be really helpful, but don't be so focused on a set schedule that you miss opportunities for you and your children to experience the joy of homeschooling.

Read, bake, and play together, and enjoy your time learning alongside one another. Model curiosity and wonder, and allow your children to ask lots of questions. Take trips outside of the home to the library, the zoo, the park, and museums. Give your child plentiful opportunities to be exposed to new concepts and ideas with as many hands-on experiences as possible. Then, when they're ready for more formal instruction, their desire to learn will already be firmly established and the challenge of learning something new will be exciting to them.

Once your child is ready to learn to read, Foundational Phonics is here to guide both you and your child through a logical, organized, and systematic method of reading instruction. Our curriculum was designed to help parents gently usher their children into a love of learning through a gentle, multi-sensory approach. Both books in the series are open-and-go, with everything you need to teach your child to read in a fun, effective manner.

“Can I use Word Mastery to teach spelling?”

As a child moves beyond reading and spelling simple CVC words, Word Mastery helps them build upon that foundation by introducing students to some helpful tools for deepening their understanding of more advanced spelling concepts.

First, children are introduced to word families—words that typically follow the same spelling pattern based on pronunciation (phonemic awareness). Each lesson contains word boxes, grouping these word families together so that children can understand how words are spelled when they contain similar sounds within the full word. Example: hut, nut, cut, gut

Any exceptions to the typical spelling pattern or pronunciation are highlighted with boxes around them to make it easier for a child to remember which words do not follow the spelling pattern. Example: put (-ut word family)

Diacritical marks are introduced to assist a child with internalizing the short and long vowel sounds as they are used in a word, helping them both say and spell the word correctly. Syllabification is also introduced, helping a student break down words into correctly spelled syllables. Students are taught that every syllable must contain a vowel and learn to listen for which vowel sounds they hear in each syllable based on their practice with word families.

Everything is included within each lesson, including the supporting reading selections. You may go at your child's individual pace and adapt or repeat lessons as needed to build up their confidence and help them better retain the information in each lesson.

Foundational Phonics provides all a mother needs to teach her child to read, write, and spell for a lifetime of learning well.

Frequently Asked Question: Does Letter Mastery teach any spelling?

Letter Mastery, book one in the Foundational Phonics series, not only helps your child learn how to read in a logical, systematic manner, it also sets the stage for learning how to spell in the early years.

By the third chapter, students are reading their first word (m-a-n) and can easily make the connection between sounding out a word and using the sounds to help them spell the word.

Through the practice of word-building, (a precursor to more formal spelling practice) children build each word they've learned to read using movable alphabet flashcards, building a word letter-by-letter in provided boxes, or exploring what happens to a word when you change one letter at a time to make a new word.

Directional arrows and dots in the reading practice portion of each lesson help the child continue to associate each letter sound with its shape, forming those early skills of sounding out one letter at a time, both to read and spell.

The carefully crafted reading selections offer extra spelling support by providing multiple exposures to words containing the letter sounds that a child has learned incrementally as they've progressed through each lesson.

Letter Mastery is the perfect way to start your child on the right foot as they learn to read. Each lesson is open-and-go and provides everything you need to help your child achieve reading and spelling success as they continue on their learning journey.

Do you have a child with speech delays, speech impediments, or other learning differences like dysgraphia, dyspraxia, or dyslexia? The process of learning how to read can often be quite frustrating for children with these challenges. Foundational Phonics was created with them in mind!

This approach is especially beneficial to children with learning challenges.

The Foundational Phonics series covers everything your child needs to become a confident reader. The pages are not busy, but engaging with interesting stories and beautiful black and white illustrations to minimize distractions. All lessons are open-and-go, and allow you to go at your child's individual pace while giving you the flexibility to customize the length and scope to fit your child’s needs.
