Once a child begins to read, it can be tempting to stop reading aloud and only require them to read books to you at their current skill level.

However, it's very important to continue reading aloud at a level two to three times the child's skill level throughout their reading journey.

Let's find out why!

We often think of reading aloud as something we do only before a child can read for themselves, but there are so many benefits to this practice that impact a child's literacy--from the early stages of learning to read to becoming fluent readers and beyond.

Today, let's take a look at how reading aloud impacts an emergent reader (one just beginning to learn to read).

The Foundational Phonics series uses a specific font for handwriting--one designed to help prevent letter reversals and other common reading hindrances, as well as to prepare a child to easily transition from print to cursive later on.

Learn more in today's post about about how the font for Foundational Phonics was chosen and how it assists a child, in particular those with dyslexia, as they are learning to read and write.

Diacritical marks are a helpful tool for children who are just beginning to read.

A breve is a curved mark above a vowel to indicate that it says its short sound.

A macron is a straight mark above a vowel to indicate that it says its long sound (or its own name).

A cedilla is a little tail added to the letter 's' when it makes a buzzing sound instead of a hiss.

The second book in the Foundational Phonics series, Word Mastery, introduces young learners to the concept of reading and labeling words with diacritical marks, but why?

Read above to learn more about how diacritical marks assist a child who is learning to read.

Copywork is a simple yet powerful tool for penmanship, grammar, and spelling in the later years, but copywork also assists in beginning reading instruction and helps to build reading fluency as a child progresses through each lesson in the Foundational Phonics Series.

*NOTE: If your child doesn't yet possess the fine motor skills for formal copywork, we offer Jumbo Handwriting Cards on our website for beginning letter practice without physical writing.

You may print these on cardstock and hang them at your child's eye level for easy access and daily practice.

To make these cards more tactile, use school glue and place little dots along the lines and let them dry. Children can run their fingers along the dots to form the letters.

Progress in reading fluency should always be measured by how far a child has come, not how far they still have to go.

To encourage your child as they build reading fluency, while also assuring yourself that they are making adequate progress, you can utilize a few simple assessment methods.

Our Story

Foundational phonics is the only reading program of it's kind that combines a traditional phonics method with a multi-sensory approach. It brings to life the simple, age old, proven methods of our forefathers and presents them in fun, engaging ways that not only build neural pathways, but delight children and teachers alike.

The natural progression from learning the letters and their sounds to reading with confidence is not interrupted by over stimulation and busywork, but instead enhanced by delightful black and white drawings, engaging stories, and careful application. By infusing all purposeful activity through multiple learning channels and adding a bit of playfulness to keep it fun, this curriculum appeals to multiple learning styles. Together, both student and teacher are guided on this journey as each concept is introduced, explained and applied in a way that is logical and easy to understand. There are no tedious scripted teacher’s manuals, extra pieces or prep work necessary. Any competent reader can easily spend quality time with a non reader and achieve success with this curriculum.
