What I think it means, at least to me.

I remain optimistic about all things, some perhaps beyond hope. I think it's because I know I can't control everything. When my mom was close to death, I believed she would live. I had two choices: worry or not worry, because I couldn't control the outcome, and I'd rather feel good than bad. There's time to feel sad later.

Hebrews 11:1 is like that. It says to have confidence in what we hope for (my mom would live, so it gave me hope and strength) and assurance about what we cannot see (the outcome, which allowed hope over fear). Basically, it means something good is coming, we just may not know what it is yet.

Faith doesn't erase sadness, but it gives us courage to face it if it comes.

Life: You choose defeat or victory!

"Sometimes a piece of shrapnel hits you, might leave your leg or arm stiff and a little black and blue, but you are not hurt enough to stop. So it goes in any kind of fight. You get hit, sure, you are bound to; but that doesn't mean you're out or that you're even hurt, unless you want to to think so." Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters

Interesting how this is similar to the advice given by Rocky Balboa to his son in the now famous "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows" talk. One is Hollywood, one is real life, but both are right.

There really have been victories here. Most go unnoticed. A couple months ago, the “Making Our Children Healthy Again” report was issued. Not in this article, but important, was the idea of reinstating the presidential fitness test in U.S. schools. The Trump administration cited "crisis levels" of childhood obesity, sedentary behavior, and poor nutrition now.

This isn't about me but, I was born in 1952. We ate regular, real meals. To have fun, we couldn't be sedentary. If we wanted to have fun, by necessity we played outside, mostly running games. We rode bikes to get places. We had mandatory PE in schools. As a result, except by very rare exception, we have childhood obesity.

Those opposing point to body shaming and psychological effect it could have. Studies have found being physically conditioned is related t mental health. Problem solved. Besides, the anti-body shaming crowd wants to celebrate the unhealthy. Be Syndney Sweeny, not Lizzo. It has nothing to do with jeans or the color of your skin. You'll feel better for it.

By now, everyone is probably aware of Holly, the Cincinnati beating victim. If you live in Ohio and are the victim of a violent crime, there is some help available you may not be aware of and, my guess is other states have similar programs. Everyone injured is not going to have a social media person putting together a massive fundraiser. Thankfully, Holly did because her injuries appear severe.

Ohio’s Crime Victims Compensation Program helps victims like Holly recover out-of-pocket expenses not covered by other sources, such as medical bills, counseling, lost wages, and funeral costs, up to a $50,000 limit.

The program is funded by fines and court costs from criminal and traffic offenders in Ohio, supplemented by federal Victims of Crime Act grants administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Ohio portion is not taxpayer money, and I have to believe is the bulk of the program money. Attorney fees may be covered, but they are typically low and capped, based on my experience from over 20 years ago when I last did these. There is an added feature, but it is not necessary here.

The program is administered by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, with judicial review by the Ohio Court of Claims. Receiving compensation does not prevent a victim from filing a civil lawsuit, though the program may seek repayment for covered expenses if a lawsuit recovers the same costs. In legal terms, it’s called subrogation.

Holly may not be eligible to use the fund because of the way the fundraiser was worded. The fundraiser organized by Benny Johnson was intended to help Holly with financial burdens resulting from the July 26, 2025, Cincinnati mob attack, including medical bills, legal fees, security costs, and loss of work expenses.

Still, Holly received about ten times the $50,000 cap by Ohio and could still fashion a lawsuit. I would file a civil rights action against the city in federal court.

So, remember, if you are a victim injured in the commission of a crime against you, there may be compensation available at no cost.

Old School

“Bottom Line: Make BASIC Great Again,” a Pentagon source told Just the News. “Tossing bunks is back. Drill sergeants are back. Getting cursed at is back.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on Tuesday that he had overturned a recent order banning traditional tactics used by drill sergeants to train new recruits, a move he says will ensure soldiers are equipped for battle. On July 30, Col. Christopher J. Hallows, Commander of the 197th Infantry at...
