After injuries derailed his dreams of starring on Penn Manor's football team, Spencer Stuart has found his place on West Virginia University's rugby team. Spencer is set to graduate after the spring 2027 semester, hoping to cap off his collegiate rugby career with a successful senior season.

"My favorite thing about rugby is how it has filled a large void in my heart that football left," Spencer said. "Football meant everything to me as a kid and leading into high school, and my body just never let me be the player I was supposed to be."

Matt Fanelli is Warwick School District's new athletic director (AD), succeeding Earl Hazel who retired at the end of June. Fanelli previously served as AD of Eastern York School District, aiming to advocate for a new group of student-athletes.

"It's the story of the sports and the athletes," said Fanelli. "They all get one shot at an athletic experience. They each get four years. It takes a whole lot of interest, a whole lot of community support, to make things run."

While Andy Tibbins was forbidden from playing football in high school due to head injuries, his love for watching the game led him to becoming Pequea Valley's new head football coach (Pequea Valley Athletics). Tibbins previously coached in both Garden Spot's youth systems and Pequea Valley's junior high program.

"Success is judged a little differently at Pequea," Tibbins said. "Having kids here this year is a success. Do I want to win games? Absolutely, but I want to compete, right? That's their goal."

The Reading Archery Club-sponsored competitive scholastic 3D archery (S3DA) program engages more than 40 children ages 8 and under to 15 and older across Lancaster and neighboring counties. These participants include the Griggs brothers, Caleb (left) and Abram, who have captured multiple national championships in S3DA archery.

"The key to success in archery is being consistent," said Bob Lauffer, who's been the S3DA coach of the Reading Archery Club (RAC) for 11 years. "That requires the ability to focus. Good archers do exactly the same thing exactly the same way on every shot. The key to consistency is fundamentally sound practice. Each archer needs to develop a shooting form they can replicate shot after shot..."

Coinciding with the arrival of new head coach Andy Tibbins, Pequea Valley Athletics football will be hosting its inaugural "Bags in the Valley" corn hole fundraiser at the school's stadium on Aug. 1. Cash prizes will be given to top tournament performers, and attendees may also participate in 50-50 and gift basket drawings. Food trucks and kids activities will be present.

"Part of this change is a shift in the overall culture of how we function," Tibbins said. "Not just as a football team, but as a booster club. I wanted it to be a community type thing."

On July 4, Michael Smith, a soon-to-be ninth-grader at Conestoga Valley High School, served as a flag bearer for a ceremony held prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup game between France and Paraguay. The opportunity came to be through the United States' Navy Gold Star program, supporting family members of sailors who died in the line of duty such as Michael's late father, Captain David Smith.

"I love soccer with every bone in my body," said Michael. "The World Cup only happens every four years. It unites a nation, and it unites everyone. It's a game everyone is able to play."

Octorara Area High School, Atglen, PA alumna and Parkesburg native Mallorie Gurel has been a baton twirler since she was 9 years old, serving as a feature twirler in all her four years at Temple University as part of the school's Diamond Band. Gurel has twirled for numerous audiences, including performing in the 2025 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

"I'd say it's kind of like a mix of dance and gymnastics, kind of like a cheerleader position," Gurel said. "You're trying to engage the audience, and it's a big way to show school spirit and get people excited for whatever is about to happen."
