Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! (Ferret Records 2003)

Unfortunately a timely one for today. First, RIP Andy Williams. A guy I never knew, but seemed to have a positive impact on the world and our shared scene specifically.

Around the time this record came out, I think I was seeing ETID often and usually enjoying them. I liked this record too, but “Hot Damn!” was the last of theirs that I ever bought.

It was almost immediately evident that the band was headed for something else outside of hardcore/metalcore. It was a place/style/sound I wasn’t interested in though. This dropped the Summer after I graduated and I think that’s where I veered much harder into straight forward hardcore. The fashionable s**t that came along with bands like ETID, Bleeding Through, 18V, etc was just never for me. This record leaned into that. Still, I always came back to listen to all of their records and there is some very very good stuff past this. Probably their best was yet to come if you ask their real fans.

This though was their peak for me.

Erie Hardcore Scene Report - A Documentary of Lake Effect Hardcore compilation (Surprise Attack Records)

This has been probably my favorite comp ever since I got it. Though I love the music, it’s not really about the songs. Brother’s Keeper was probably the only band I was familiar with when I first got it. I loved that it repped a scene in Pennsylvania. Erie is so far away from where I’ve always lived in PA that I’ll never go there, but the respect is always there for what they had/have.

Despite being a measly slipcase, the artwork throughout and the crucial small saddle-stitched insert make this a wonderfully packaged gem. I’ve probably owned five copies in my lifetime. I wonder how many were pressed.

Now that BK is back in action, run a few thousand more.

G.F.Y. - ‘Til The Day We Die (DFF Records 2002)

I don’t know if I could ever call this band underrated, because all my friends loved them so much, that they were probably overrated in my circle. Still, they were a plenty serviceable and even good representation of tough in-your-face hardcore.

I always wonder if bands were limited from the beginning when they choose a name like this. Obviously, this type of hardcore doesn’t go far, but maybe they were good enough to go farther.

Also, no mention of G.F.Y. can be complete without mentioning vocalist Keith Peterson can frequently be seen on TV reffing massive UFC fights these days. That’s a win for the scene when we see one of our own out there doing big things.

Turn It Down! a compilation by Last Shot Records from 2007 is a snapshot of a hardcore era that had grown stale. Only a few of the bands featured here made a modest imprint on the scene.

TAEA and Cut It Out are the two that stand out most to me. Most of the rest don’t seem to have existed much outside of this comp/sampler. Same goes for the labels involved with exception to Triple B, New Age, and Organized Crime.

Thank god the TUI demo saved us the same year.

The veteran thrash unit will drop their fifth full-length album “Exsequiis” on September 11th via Metal Blade Records. Hudson (vocals/guitar) talks about that record as I try to figure out how I just found out about them.

Truth In Needles - Turning Gray Black (Pride Over Pain Records 2011) is an unheralded band and record of NYHC. Maybe rightfully so, but at worst it’s competent in their intended style and sound.

I always liked discovering bands like this who seemed destined to not breakout of their local scene, but happy to be part of it. Hardcore is certainly for the young, but much like an NBA team, it’s good to have some vets around.

It’s a two-for-one today as these 3” discs will always be linked in my mind. Meat Puppets - In A Car and Minutemen - Joy, both on SST Records in one of the most obnoxious formats in existence.

It’s relatively early material from both bands and maybe not essential stuff, but good enough ya know? I like the novelty of these more than the practicality. In fact, they’ve probably rarely been played, but have clattered to the ground enough to show their age.

Dredg - Leitmotif (2001). I don’t remember exactly how this was marketed, but I think it was as a tertiary nu-metal thing that somehow sounded like Tool. None of that is really accurate. I loved it from the first time I heard it though. It was very different from anything else I was listening to at the time.

Despite my efforts, I couldn’t get anyone else I knew to like it too. So much so that when I turned 18, I went to see them at the Chameleon Club as my first non-all-ages show. My friend was so reluctant that they waited in the car while I went in to watch their set. That was the only time I saw them.

SpiritWorld -Demo 2017. After posting the TUI demo the other day, someone asked what my top five demos are. I don’t have that answer, but this is among them. Easily.

There is something about it where the first play warrants a second. It came out at massive transition point for me and Stu’s autobiographical lyrics resonated even if they weren’t directly relatable. The music stands entirely on its own. I’ve literally never heard anything else like it. Every song sounds like a search and it finds so many things to love. I hear a lot more than music.

I put this on at the gym this morning, and on the drive back to my house with the windows down, and now as I drink my first cup of coffee. It might be my favorite thing I’ve ever heard.

Red Son - The Hopeless Dreamers is a self-released EP from 2010. The band was from Arizona and played a melodic style of hardcore that was probably a few years too late. I had taken a liking to them on their previous EP when I reviewed it for Stereokiller.com and ordered this when it dropped. I listened to it this morning and it’s kind of exactly what I remember. Still dated, but fine.

Has anyone else even heard of Red Son? It didn’t feel like it then, and I can’t imagine that has changed in the 16 years since.
