George Weah Rejects Alleged $1 Billion Offer from Elon Musk for His Ballon d'Or
Liberian football legend George Weah, the only African to have ever won the prestigious Ballon d’Or, has stated that he would never sell his historic award, even if offered $1 billion by billionaire Elon Musk.
Weah emphasized the sentimental and historical significance of the trophy, describing it as more than just a personal achievement but a symbol of African footballing excellence.
> "My Ballon d’Or isn’t just my greatest achievement in football—it’s the only one in Africa. Even if the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, offers me more than $1 billion for it, I will tell him no! I have told my children never to sell it, even if they go broke. Some things are worth more than silver and gold, and my Ballon d’Or is one of them. I worked very hard for it, and I want generations upon generations to see it."
Weah further noted that his family has a responsibility to safeguard the trophy, ensuring that it remains a lasting symbol of African pride and football history.
The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner remains one of the most celebrated sports man in African football, with his legacy extending beyond sports into politics, having served as Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024.
