Springtime in Oklahoma most always means an increase in rain chances. If heavy April showers do come along this year, there is the possibility that floodgate operations will be necessary at Grand River Dam Authority dams. With that in mind, it is a good time for GRDA to share some important information about staying safe around those facilities in this week's 'Power for Progress' column.

First created in 1935 to be a “conservation and reclamation district” for the Grand River, the Grand River Dam Authority has been involved in the protection and preservation of Oklahoma’s natural resources ever since. With the establishment of its Ecosystems & Watershed Management Department in the early 2000s and the completion of a state-of-the-art water quality monitoring laboratory in 2010 in Langley and, in 2019, on the campus of Northeastern State University, GRDA continues to make water quality monitoring a primary objective.

Friday, March 7th, the Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors held a Ribbon Cutting for a new WWII exhibit at Har-Ber Village on Grand Lake O' The Cherokees. This is the first new exhibit since 2013 and was funded by the Legacy Liberty Memorial Park at Shangri-La on Grand Lake. Paul Bulten spoke about the items in the display and cut the ribbon with Nicole Reynolds. Afterwards there was a meet and greet with local Vietnam Veteran Herb Adams at his Vietnam exhibition in the Museum gallery. Saturday, March 8th was opening day for Har-Ber Village. Check it out!

The store has New & Used books at great prices, and local gifts & art. She has a bonus room where she plans on having game & puzzle nights and Book Club Chats.

There are many strange and wonderful sights to be seen along the shores of Grand Lake, OK. This one was visible near Patricia Island for many years until it drifted back into the realm of Grand Lake legend and lore about 4 years ago. Grand River Dam Authority Floodwater Release Bulletin

At 12:30 PM on Tuesday, March 11:

Grand Lake elevation was 744.74 feet.
At the direction of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, one (1) main spillway gate was open at Pensacola Dam, discharging 6,109 cubic feet per second (cfs) of water.
Three (3) units were online at the Pensacola Dam powerhouse, releasing 6,780 cfs of water through generation.
Releases through floodgates and generation totaled 12,889 cfs.
Inflows into Grand Lake totaled 3,380 cfs.

Lake Hudson elevation was 628.57 feet.
No floodgates were open at Robert S. Kerr Dam
One (1) unit was online at the Robert S. Kerr Dam powerhouse, releasing 4,860 cfs of water through generation.
Inflows into Lake Hudson totaled 13,163 cfs.

It was relatively clear and quiet yesterday morning, and there was a bit of water being released, so I decided to drop by our very own, Pensacola Dam on Grand Lake, OK. No matter how many times I photograph there, the sheer scope and scale of the world's longest multiple arch dam, is always impressive. Also it does not require a lot of water being released, to make for fun, whitewater photos. Enjoy, RC

Later this week, we will all “spring forward” as Daylight-Saving Time returns to Oklahoma. Initially, that means moving the clocks ahead one hour (officially at 2AM on Sunday, March 9) and losing an hour of sleep. However, over the long term it means more light in the evenings and (when it finally warms up) more of us will be spending time outdoors.

However, it’s not just about longer days. It’s also about energy usage. In fact, according to energy.gov. when energy department experts studied the impact of Daylight Saving Time on energy consumption a few years back, they found it all adds up to electricity savings of 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours, or the amount of electricity used by more than 100,000 households in an entire year. Generally, these savings occurred during a three-to-five-hour period each evening. Conversely, other studies have found that while the demand for residential lighting goes down with Daylight Saving Time, the demand for heating and cooling goes up.
