On a farm stand in Charlotte, Michigan, in a county that voted for Donald Trump by a wide margin in 2024, Sarah and Kim Padilla hung a Pride flag and waited to see what would happen.

Picture rainbow colors against a backdrop of farmland — families, couples and kids browsing baked goods and homemade crafts, with no city skyline in sight. That’s what greeted the 500 people who showed up in mid-June for Pride on the Farm at Wildflower Wives Farm Stand & Bakery (WildflowerWives), the Padillas’ family business.

The couple weren’t sure whether flying rainbow colors over their farmland would draw support or backlash, especially as the current administration moves aggressively against LGBTQ+ rights. But on June 13 and 14, the community showed up, spending the weekend celebrating, petting farm animals and finding out they weren’t as alone in rural Michigan as they might have assumed.

“We put a little Pride flag out, and we didn’t know how that was going to hit with our town because Charlotte is known to be not accepting of people who don’t fit the mold,” Sarah tells Pride Source.
