Local resident Marie McRae, a member of the town of Dryden’s climate action committee, brought forth an idea last year.

McRae had attended a repair cafe event in Montour Falls. She'd also noticed something written about the concept, which led to her thinking it could work in Dryden.

In the world of American transportation, cars are considered king. No one understands this better than Fernando de Aragón, outgoing executive director of the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council (ITCTC).

But that doesn’t mean it is impossible to strike a balance between automobiles and their alternatives, de Aragón said. It has been the great challenge of his career to help keep the roads and bridges paved and safe while also pushing for a more diverse transportation ecosystem that includes more walkers and bus riders, fewer SUVs.

Danby may soon be getting a new covered skate park.

On a quiet piece of town-owned land at 15 Bald Hill Rd., one of the town’s residents has a plan to renovate an old three-sided shelter once used by the town highway department, turning it into an attraction for local youth, complete with a small halfpipe.

In a local survey of Danby residents distributed by the Danby Youth Commission, several of them listed a skate park as their number-one choice for a new place to spend time, and Zachary Larkins, who resides close to the Bald Hill property, hopes to make that dream a reality.

Tompkins County law enforcement (Tompkins County Sheriff's Office) is leaning on new technology to fight serious crime, pairing state grant funding with tools such as gunshot detectors and automated license plate readers. County Sheriff Derek Osborne says that the innovations not only speed up responses but also signal how the department plans to tackle gun violence, drug activity and community trust in the years ahead.

In 2023, Tompkins County received a $337,395 Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) grant. This year, the sheriff’s office received $220,650 in GIVE money, with other local departments receiving funds through the state program, as well.

A proposal for an apartment complex in the village of Lansing that has made the rounds with local government officials for years has stalled yet again.

The apartment complex, with a mixed-use retail space component, would see the reoutfitting of a former factory in the village on Bomax Drive. The project, which was discussed at the village board meeting on Aug. 18., has fluctuated in scope. The latest proposal, from Aug. 18, featured plans for a complex of 144 one-bedroom apartments. That is a significant adjustment from previous proposals of more than 250 units.
