Road agency managers from Marquette, Baraga and Dickinson counties were on hand to rally in the UP to urge Michigan legislators to finish the job of adequately funding roads in the FY 2026 budget - now pending! Wetlands and turtles and roads, oh my! 🐢🌿

Today, 36 displaced baby turtles got a new home in a protected wetland created through Michigan’s Wetland Board (MiWB) program.

When Michigan road projects affect wetlands, county road agencies must balance progress with preservation. MiWB helps by providing dedicated land to offset wetland impacts, speeding up projects, lowering costs, protecting land for the future, and yes… giving baby turtles a safe place to grow.

Since the 1960s, roads have been Michigan’s “forgotten priority.” Michigan has ranked among the bottom nine states in per-capita and local road spending (excluding sales tax). Add in freeze/thaw cycles and the millions spent annually on winter road maintenance and the problem grows deeper.
