Five young poets from Whittier Primary School in Peoria have been honored as winners of the 2025 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards. The winners are Alantis Martin, Jennifer Eklund, Jermany Ashford, Delilah Long, and Mya Watkins.

The statewide contest received 867 submissions from 187 schools. Out of these, 25 winners and 12 honorable mentions were chosen. Illinois Humanities, along with Brooks Permissions, the Poetry Foundation, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, organizes the annual awards for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The contest carries the legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks, Illinois’ first Poet Laureate, who began the awards in 1969 and continued them for over three decades until her passing in 2000. Revived in 2017, the awards honor young voices across Illinois.

Among the winning works: Watkins’ The Nature Walk was inspired by her trips to the park, while Ashford’s Wind and Grass was her first attempt at poetry. Eklund’s playful Ballgown, Please! was transcribed by her librarian, Jennifer Brady, after Eklund described an imaginary gown. Long contributed The Hibiscus Flower, and Martin, the only kindergartner to win this year, was recognized for Happy Days.

The five poets will be celebrated alongside other winners at the University of Chicago’s Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, where they will present their poems. Winners also receive a cash prize and publication in a chapbook.

This year’s ceremony will additionally honor outgoing Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson and welcome her successor, Mark Turcotte.

25 years ago today, Lil Bow Wow now known by his real name Shadmoss dropped this classic album “Beware of Dogs” when he was just 13 years old.

For those who grew in the early 2000s, they’ll know how much of a rave Lil Bow Bow was. We miss those days of great hip hop music!
