Recent FBI data and related analyses show New Mexico consistently ranks above the U.S. average for both violent and property crime. In 2024, violent crime rates were more than double the national average, driven largely by aggravated assaults.
That said, there’s a note of progress: 2023 saw declines in homicides, robberies, and sexual assaults. High rankings are largely tied to per-capita rates, even when year-over-year reductions occur in specific categories.
