Rising abruptly from the desert basins of Nevada, the mountain ranges locals call “sky islands” hold their own climates, histories, and quiet mysteries. One of the most compelling true stories comes from the Ruby Mountains in the late 1940s, when biologists set out to study an animal thought nearly lost to the region.
Bighorn sheep had once moved freely across the Great Basin, but disease and overhunting had driven them into isolated high elevations. Reports from ranchers claimed a small band still survived in the Rubies—high above the sagebrush, where snow lingered and water trickled from alpine springs.
In 1948, a small team hiked into the range, carrying minimal gear and weeks of supplies. As they climbed, the world changed. The heat of the valley floor gave way to cool pine forests, then to stark, wind-cut ridgelines. After days of searching, they found tracks—fresh ones—etched into a patch of lingering snow.
At dawn the next morning, they finally saw them. A group of desert bighorn sheep stood silhouetted against the sky, balanced effortlessly on cliffs that seemed impossible to traverse. The animals had survived by retreating into this isolated “island in the sky,” cut off from other populations but protected by the very remoteness that made them hard to find.
That discovery helped spark conservation efforts across Nevada. Over the following decades, wildlife managers used these isolated populations to reintroduce bighorn sheep to other ranges, rebuilding what had nearly vanished.
Today, if you climb high enough into Nevada’s sky islands, you might still see them—quiet, watchful shapes against the horizon—living proof that even in isolation, life can endure.
