Remembering Freddie Mercury
He was a British singer, songwriter, and record producer, widely regarded as one of the greatest lead vocalists in rock music history. He achieved global fame as the charismatic and flamboyant frontman of the rock band Queen.

Mercury was known for his powerful, four-octave vocal range and dynamic, theatrical stage presence. His artistic direction heavily influenced Queen's style, which blended various genres including rock, pop, opera, and gospel.

Mercury was also noted for his captivating live performances, such as Queen's highly acclaimed set at the 1985 Live Aid concert. He pursued a solo career as well, releasing two albums, Mr. Bad Guy (1985) and Barcelona (1988), the latter a collaboration with Spanish opera soprano Montserrat Caballé.

Mercury had significant relationships with both men and women throughout his life. He was engaged to Mary Austin in the 1970s and they remained lifelong, close friends; he left his London home, Garden Lodge, and much of his estate to her. At the time of his death, his partner was Jim Hutton, an Irish hairdresser with whom he had a six-year relationship.

Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 but kept his condition private for several years. On November 23, 1991, he publicly announced his diagnosis, and he died the following day, at age 45, from complications of bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS. His public battle with the disease helped raise global awareness and funds for AIDS research through the Mercury Phoenix Trust charity, established in his memory.

Remembering Eric Carr
He was an American musician, best known as the drummer for the hard rock band KISS. He was a member of the band from 1980 until his death from heart cancer in 1991 at the age of 41.

Carr replaced original drummer Peter Criss in 1980 and took on the stage persona of "The Fox". His powerful, heavy-hitting drumming style, influenced by drummers like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, brought a new energy to the band's sound during the 1980s. Fans and band members alike praised his talent and positive personality.

Carr was known for being very friendly and approachable to fans, often answering mail and meeting with them. He also contributed background vocals and co-wrote some songs, such as "Under the Rose" with Gene Simmons and "Escape from the Island" with Ace Frehley.

Carr was diagnosed with a rare form of heart cancer in early 1991. He died on November 24, 1991, the same day as Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, a coincidence that many fans feel caused his death to be overshadowed in the media.

Happy 71st Birthday to Bruce Hornsby
He is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. His music draws from a wide range of traditions — folk, jazz, modern classical, bluegrass, rock, and jam band styles.

In 1980, he and his younger brother and songwriting partner John Hornsby moved to Los Angeles, where they spent three years writing for 20th Century Fox. He also spent time in Los Angeles as a session musician where he became friends with members of Ambrosia. He and Ambrosia bassist Joe Puerta later performed as members of the touring band for Sheena Easton.

In 1984, Hornsby appeared in the music video for Easton's singles "Strut" and “Sugar Walls".

Hornsby made a solo demo recording of “Mandolin Rain,” “The Way It Is,” and “The Red Plains” which led to him being signed by RCA in 1985.

After being signed he formed Bruce Hornsby and the Range in 1984, whose debut album, The Way It Is (1986), went multi-platinum and won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987. The title track, with its iconic piano hook, addressed social issues like racism and homelessness and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

From 1990 to 1992, Hornsby was a touring member of the Grateful Dead, playing over 100 shows and contributing to their improvisational style.

Hornsby has collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Bob Dylan, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Ricky Skaggs, and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. His solo work has explored jazz (Harbor Lights), bluegrass (Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby), and even an album where he primarily played dulcimer (Rehab Reunion).

His recent work includes a trilogy of albums released between 2019 and 2022 (Absolute Zero, Non-Secure Connection, and 'Flicted), some of which were developed from film cues he composed for director Spike Lee. In March 2024, he released Deep Sea Vents, a collaborative album with the chamber ensemble yMusic, under the moniker BrhyM.

Happy 75th Birthday to Tina Weymouth
She is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and a founding member and bassist of the new wave group Talking Heads and its side project Tom Tom Club, which she co-founded with her husband, Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz.

As a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, she met future bandmates David Byrne and Chris Frantz. After moving to New York City, she picked up the bass guitar at Frantz's request and joined the Talking Heads in 1974. Her distinctive playing style is a key element of the band's sound, blending minimalist art-punk basslines with danceable, funk-infused riffs. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

During a hiatus from Talking Heads in the early 1980s, Weymouth and Frantz formed the Tom Tom Club. The project achieved commercial success with hits like "Genius of Love" (which has been sampled over a hundred times) and "Wordy Rappinghood".

Weymouth and Frantz also worked as producers for other artists, including the Happy Mondays and Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, the latter of which won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1988. She also contributed vocals to the Gorillaz track "19-2000".

Weymouth is considered a trailblazing figure for women in rock music and an influential bassist, with Rolling Stone ranking her as the 29th greatest bass player of all time in 2020. Her innovative approach has inspired many female musicians, including Este Haim and Victoria De Angelis of MĂĄneskin.

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I wanna spend some time with you

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I

We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not for those who wait too late
We gotta go for all we know

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building them castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
And darling when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I wanna be the one with you

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building big castles way on high
Just the two of us
You and I

Remembering Junior Walker
He was an American musician known for leading the group Junior Walker & the All Stars. Primarily a tenor saxophonist, he was a signature artist for Motown Records' Soul imprint. His distinct saxophone style had a lasting impact on R&B and funk.

Joining Motown in 1964, Junior Walker & the All Stars' raw R&B sound brought them success.

Their biggest hit was the dance track "Shotgun" (1965), which topped R&B charts and reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other hits include "(I'm a) Road Runner," "Shake and Fingerpop," and "What Does It Take (to Win Your Love)".

Walker performs the iconic saxophone solo on Foreigner's 1981 hit song "Urgent".

Walker continued performing with a version of the All Stars until his death from cancer at the age of 64 in Battle Creek, Michigan, on November 23, 1995.

His music remains a significant part of the Motown legacy.

"Shotgun" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. Junior Walker & the All Stars joined the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2007.

In 1979, Christopher Cross had no commercial expectations for his self-titled debut album, and intended his debut as a personal project.

In an interview, Cross stated he made the album "with no expectation" and "never expected in a million years" that it would be so successful.

He described his approach as a "pure belief in the process and in the craft," focusing on the music rather than on fame.

The album's soft-rock sound challenged mainstream music trends at the time, which were dominated by the decline of disco and the rise of punk and new wave music.

The album, released on December 27, 1979, exceeded all expectations to become a massive hit, propelling Cross into the music elite.

It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart and included four Top 20 hits, including the #1 single "Sailing".

At the 1981 Grammy Awards, Cross became the first artist in history to win all "big four" awards in one night: Album of the Year, Record of the Year ("Sailing"), Song of the Year ("Sailing"), and Best New Artist.
