Lately, I’ve been feeling your big-ness.
Your big personality as you toddle into the living room.
The way you take up space on my lap as I rock you to sleep.
When my arms and back ache at the end of the day from carrying you.
How easy it is for you to slide down my hip when you want to.
First the first time since you were born, I worry that you’ll out grow me.
That a day will come when I can’t lift you any more.
That a day will come when a cuddle from Mama won’t be enough.
That a day will come when you don’t need me like you used to.
Lately I’ve been feeling your big-ness.
Let me be the first to tell you baby, your big-ness is coming and it’s a good thing.
See, we live in a world where people will want to keep you small.
Too small to lead a crowd.
Too small to speak up.
Too small to show off your big-ness.
And on the days when you feel small, I want you to remember who your Mama is.
At 5 foot 3, somehow managing to be the loudest person in the room.
At 130lbs wet, somehow managing to take up space.
And though I’m sad you won’t be little forever, I need you to hear me when I say, there will come a day when your big-ness is your super power.
Your big-ness will open doors, it will break barriers, it will create massive change, it will make strangers feel loved and insecure men feel intimidated, it will help you carve your way in this world.
Be Big my girl.
As big as your lungs and heart will allow you to be.
As big as your brave, disarming, unrelenting self can handle.
Because the world might want to keep you small, but I will be there to remind you how BIG you are.
Be Big, my girl.
And if someone ever makes you feel small, you come tell your Mama, I’ll show you how it’s done.
