The Confederacy rallies at the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville after which the Union’s victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg tamp down Southern aspirations.

In the course of this dramatic confrontation, Geoffrey Garrett goes to work at an Iron Foundry with his black charge, Toby, where they go to work at Thaddeus Steven’s Iron Foundry just outside of Gettysburg while Blake McCune investigates slave insurance in Western Maryland.
