In the 1930s, winemaker Henri Gouges was tasked with classifying the region’s vineyards. Because he owned a massive portion of the village’s best site (Les Saint-Georges), he intentionally left it off the top-tier Grand Cru list to avoid accusations of bias—and to dodge higher property taxes.

Nearly a century later, the village is still fighting the French government to get it upgraded.
