Many survivors stay in dangerous situations because they fear what might happen to their pets if they escape. Abusers often use animals as leverage, and it’s one of the most heartbreaking barriers to safety. There are organizations that help survivors leave with their pets, and that support can be life-saving for both. Safety shouldn’t require abandoning the animals we love. Call 800.799.SAFE for resources in the US or visit sinspod.co/resources for more info.

The holidays can be a complicated time for survivors. Expectations run high, families gather, old dynamics surface, and not everyone feels safe or understood this time of year. If someone you care about is navigating trauma or healing from abuse, small acts of support really do make a difference.

Be a buffer when conversations get tense. Listen without trying to fix everything. Honor the boundaries they set, even if you don’t fully understand them. Extend invitations without pressure or guilt. And remind them that rest, quiet moments, and self-care are more than okay.

Survivors need people who show up with compassion, patience, and consistency. If you have someone like that in your life, hold space for them this season.

This week’s Swing Shift goes deeper into the murder of Meagan Ruiz and the questions her case leaves behind.

In the main episode, we walk through what happened inside that Crosswinds apartment and the history of domestic violence calls that never led to real protection. In Swing Shift, we step back and talk about what that 8–20 year sentence really means, why it feels so light for the killing of a 32-year-old mother of three, and how often the system seems to fall short in cases like hers.

We also spend time with the other story from this week’s episode: the disappearance of William “Sky” Pilgrim during the March 2020 flood, and what it reveals about how unhoused and underground communities in Las Vegas are overlooked, especially during crises like the early days of the pandemic.

If you want to hear how these pieces fit together, and what didn’t make it into the main episode, you can listen to Swing Shift by subscribing on Patreon or Apple Subscriptions at sinspod.co/subscribe.

Today we’re sharing the story of 32-year-old Meagan Ruiz — a mother of three, a daughter, a sister, and a creative soul whose life was defined by so much more than the circumstances of her death. When officers arrived at her Las Vegas apartment in July 2024, they were handed a story that fell apart as soon as investigators began asking questions. What emerged was a deeper history of conflict, missed opportunities for intervention, and a narrative that shifted again and again.

This episode looks not only at what happened inside that apartment, but also at the warning signs that too often get minimized or dismissed. Meagan deserved safety, protection, and a future. Her story matters, and so does the pattern behind it — one that affects families in every community, not just here in Las Vegas.

Tomorrow, we’re sharing the story of a young Las Vegas mother whose life was taken inside her own home — a case shaped by shifting explanations, prior police calls, and a history of conflict that never should have been dismissed as “just a family matter.”

It’s a difficult story, but an important one. We’re taking you through what’s known, what investigators uncovered, and who Meagan was beyond the headlines — a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a mother of three who deserved safety long before the worst happened.

Our new episode drops tomorrow morning. If you want to hear it ad-free — along with exclusive bonus content — you can subscribe now at sinspod.co/subscribe so you don’t miss it when it lands.
