I had the pleasure of attending the Oxi Day parade last year in Athens, Greece. It was amazing to see the huge numbers that gathered as community and family to celebrate and remember that important part of their history, and it affects all of us as well.
On October 28, 1940, when the armies of Adolf Hi**er were fighting on multiple fronts, and he allowed his Italian ally, Benito Mussolini, to take over Greece.
The Italian leader saw Greece as the neutral Lilliputian neighbor that would surrender in cowering fear of his mighty army. The response to Mussolini was a huge act against the onslaught by Hi**er and the enemy forces. The N**I forces couldn’t concentrate the full force of its military on the area of the Normandy coast of France making it possible for the US forces and it’s allies to complete the job at Normandy.
Oxi Day is celebrated every October 28th and has real significance to the outcome of World War II and our freedom in America. There are a lot of people that don’t realize how important that decision to say no to Mussolini was. It spread out the forces of Hi**er and his allies enough to give a foothold in Normandy. For that we should always be grateful.
I loved Athens! There is a love for life and country from the people that truly is inspiring, and a little addictive. I hated leaving, but I am glad it was the last stop in our European trip. It reminded me that patriotism and love of one’s culture should be celebrated!
