Teenage girl and a lady arrested for attempt to smuggle hard drugs to Kano prison inmate

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has arrested two women for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Goron Dutse, Kano.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Musbahu Lawan, disclosed this in a statement released on Monday, December 22.

Lawan said the suspects identified as Maryam Ali,19,and Hauwa Musa, 20-year-old, both residents of Kano State, were apprehended during routine security checks while attempting to gain access to the custodial centre on Dec. 21, 2025.

According to him, the women were found in possession of suspected illicit drugs, which preliminary investigations indicated were meant to be supplied to inmates within the facility.

Lawan said that the act constituted a serious violation of the NCoS regulations and is a criminal offence under the relevant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He stated that the suspects had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The federal government has declared Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26, 2025, and Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year celebrations.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Tunji-Ojo called for reflection on the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.

He also urged Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity, to use the festive season to pray for peace, security, and national progress, while supporting government efforts at national development and cohesion.

He further advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the celebrations, while wishing them a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

“The Christmas season and the New Year present an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo also enjoined citizens to remain law-abiding, security-conscious and moderate in their celebrations, while cooperating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive period.

He wished all Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year

US visa restrictions not to penalise Nigerians — Envoy

The United States’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has said that the recent visa restrictions announced by the U.S. government are not in anyway targeted at Nigerians but designed to strengthen security procedures.

Mills stated this while speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, December 21.

He said the presidential proclamation, which would take effect from Jan. 1, 2026, affecting certain visa categories, was part of broader measures to secure U.S. borders and protect American communities.

“The focus of the visa review is on ensuring proper vetting and credible information in the visa process, not on penalising Nigerians,” Mills said.

According to him, the proclamation clearly specifies the visa categories that may be affected, while also outlining exemptions for certain groups.

He listed the exemptions to include holders of official and diplomatic passports, as well as individuals travelling for religious work.

The ambassador urged visa applicants and members of the public to consult the US Embassy’s official website for detailed information on the proclamation, affected visa categories and available exemptions.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday, December 16, signed a proclamation further restricting entry into the United States for nationals of countries identified as high risk due to what the White House described as persistent and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting and information sharing that threaten national security and public safety. Among the 15 additional countries placed under partial entry restrictions is Nigeria.
