President Tinubu insists new tax law to commence January 1, 2026

Despite criticisms from different Nigerians, President Tinubu has said that the reformed Tax laws will kick effect as planned on January 1, 2026. The President stated this in a statement released last night, December 30. According to President Tinubu, the tax reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country.

The statement reads

The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned.

These reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country.

The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract.

I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage.

Our administration is aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws.

No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures.

I emphasise our administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws. The Presidency pledges to work with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any issue identified.

I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility.”

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Lekan Lasisi, for shooting his stepbrother d3ad during a dispute over N4,000 debt.

The incident happened in Abule Tuntun, Odeda Local Government Area of the state on December 19 after Lasisi engaged his brother in an argument over the deceased’s repeated act of owing debts.

According to an interrogation video shared by a Facebook user, Makinde Fasunle, on Monday, December 29, 2025, Lasisi said he was angered by the persistent demands from his stepbrother’s creditors, who allegedly asked him to pay the deceased’s debts.

The argument was said to have degenerated when the deceased allegedly brought out a cutlass to attack the suspect.

In retaliation, the suspect claimed he brought out a gun but did not know when it accidentally discharged and hit his stepbrother, leading to the latter’s d3ath.

In the video, Lasisi explained that on the day of the incident, the victim had gone to the market with goods, and while he walked to the bus stop, one of the brother’s creditors approached him to report that the deceased had failed to pay his debt.

He noted that when his brother returned from the market, he approached him to discuss his recurring debts and how his actions were causing embarrassment to the family.

“When he took a cutlass, I brought out my gun. I am a hunter. He is fond of drinking and exhibiting different attitudes that can cause trouble,” Lasisi explained.

“On the day of the incident, he took garri to the market, and we met at the expressway where we often board a vehicle. I met a woman who claimed that my brother owed her again. The money was N4,000.

“When my brother came back, I challenged him on why he would be owing debt and causing us shame. He got angry and started making trouble. He was the one who first brought out a cutlass, and I brought out a gun, but it accidentally discharged and hit him. I do not intend to k!ll him.”

While admitting to having shot the gun, Lasisi insisted that the shot was not intentional, as he had no plans of k!lling his brother

“I was paid N100,000 to bomb worshippers- Maiduguri su!cide bomber confesses

A suspected Boko Haram su!cide bomber, Ibrahim Mohammed, captured by troops of Operation HADIM KAI in collaboration with hunters in Yobe state has confessed to being paid N100, 000 to carry out su***de bombings on worshippers in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Security expert, Zagazola, reports that Ibrahim confessed to involvement in the Dec. 24 su!cide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque, Maiduguri. He said the operation was planned and executed under the directive of Boko Haram commanders operating between Adamawa State and the Mandara Mountains.

“My name is Ibrahim from Michika in Adamawa. We came to Maiduguri to plant bombs in Izala Mosque. We were sent by our leaders, Adamu and Abubakar, who gave us two IEDs to plant in the mosque,” he said during interrogation

The Gamboru Market Mosque attack claimed five lives and left 32 worshippers injured, plunging Maiduguri town into confusion during the festive period.

Narrating how the attack was executed, Ibrahim said the operatives exploited periods when mosques were empty to plant the explosive devices.

“We came after Zuhur and Asr prayers when the mosque was empty. We entered pretending to pray. My colleague was digging to plant the IED in the middle of the mosque while I was digging by the side,” he said.

According to him, the devices were coupled and timed ahead of the Maghrib prayers.

“As Muslim faithful gathered to pray Maghrib, after the first raka’at, we detonated the bomb. We set the timing for five minutes. Shortly after, I ran to the market area,” he said

In a disturbing twist, Ibrahim admitted that after the explosion, he returned to the scene and pretended to be a civilian helper.

“When I returned to the mosque, they were evacuating dead bodies. I helped them to convey the corpses and injured people in emergency vehicles. I was paid money ranging from N70,000 to N100,000 per mission.

I regret my action for killing innocent people who did not commit any crime’’ Ibrahim said
