I guess it has only been 29 years since I decided to go vegan. It happened after returning from a visit to Japan in 1996. I finally remembered since I bought the zebra print dress there after going to a punk festival in Tokyo in October 1996. (Saw The Discocks, Tom & Boot Boys, Extinct Government…)

I went vegetarian 2 years prior in 1994 (31 years ago).

I’m STILL VEGAN!!!

The only difference now is that it has become mainstream. Back in the day, it was mostly hippies and punks. The “before” photo was taken at The Black Cat Cafe in Seattle, WA. It was an anarchist collective where traveling squatters would stay and eat while doing a work exchange. They had the best vegan raspberry bars. Yum! I was cleaning up broken glass in the parking lot after a punk show I set up there.

Today, I rarely meet vegans who came from the punk scene and there’s rarely vegan food at punk shows.

Thanks to Eddy for inspiring me to go vegetarian in 1994 while I was visiting him in Ventura, CA. We are both still vegan to this day.

Always loved Bristle…
