This weekend definitely had its ups and downs! 😅🏁
First of all… IT WAS HOT. Like, dry, 100+ degree HEAT hot. 🥵🔥 And then you add racing to the mix!
Wes got both cars out for his 90 seconds of practice and was able to find his line. This was the first banked track he’s raced this season, so he definitely had to get himself into the groove. He said he felt like he was on a roller coaster! 🎢 This track was FAST!
Jr Animal Heat: P2 ➡️ P4
That secured him a spot in the A Main starting P8. With the change to a banked track, Dad made some adjustments to the car before the A Main.
Jr 160 Heat: P4 ➡️ P3
Another A Main spot secured, starting P5. Unfortunately the Mychron didn’t read any data so dad had nothing to go off to make any changes, so the car stayed the same.
And then came the A Mains… 😳
Every race this weekend seemed to be a complete WRECK FEST. After watching the lower mains, Wes actually told us he didn’t even know if he wanted to race. And if you know Wes, you know he has NEVER said that before.
First up was Jr Animal. Wes started P8 and unfortunately ended up DNF.
Dad loosened the car up a little too much, and Wes was having a hard time controlling it. He got squirrely coming through a corner, the car behind him clipped him and sent him up into the wall and back down onto the track, while another car flipped right in front of him, causing Wes to hit him.
🚩 Red flag.
Wes was sent off track with just THREE laps to get the car fixed. All the dads jumped in and started wrenching, trying to get him back out there. They got ready to push him back onto the track… and the chain popped off. 😩
They picked the car up and realized the entire motor mount had come off. They were out of time. Unfortunately, that was the end of Jr Animal for the weekend.
Then it was time for Jr 160.
Wes started P5 and worked his way up to P4. The race hadn’t even really gotten going when another driver’s throttle got stuck wide open. 😳 The car was flying around the track while the other 9 drivers were doing everything they could to avoid it. Thankfully, Wes was able to dodge the car before it hit the wall, and another dad was finally able to get ahold of it and pull the cable to stop it. (No kids were hurt)
Once things settled down, the race finally got going.
Wes held 3rd place for most of the race until about 5 laps to go, when another car got him and he finished 4th.
So… no podiums this weekend. 🏁
BUT…
Watching Wes run up front and keep pace with THREE NATIONAL WINNERS is freaking AMAZING. 🤯🔥 That’s the part we’re taking home with us.
And honestly, my favorite part was hearing him say on the drive home:
“That was so fun!” ❤️
Traveling, packing, sweating, stressing, fixing cars, late nights and all the chaos can definitely be stressful in the moment… but the memories we’re making are worth every single bit of it. ❤️🏁
We may not have brought home any trophies this weekend, but we brought home experience, memories, and one happy little race car driver. And that’s a win in our book. 🏆
