The St. Jude Walk/Run Las Vegas is going virtual this year! While we had looked forward to walking or running with you in person this September, our plans are a little different now, but in these challenging times, one thing will not change: Families will never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all families should worry about is helping their child live.

Today, our campus is a community landmark and an important part of life in Boulder City. Not only do we continue to serve the needs of abused and neglected children and young adults in Southern Nevada, we give tours of our campus, maintain a Thrift Store that is open to the public seven days a week and conduct weddings in our beautiful chapel.

Crossings and New Crossings, our transitional living programs for homeless youth and families, and Child Focus, our sibling preservation program, are both located in Las Vegas.

As our community faces incredible turmoil, the needs for food, shelter, and utility assistance resulting from COVID-19 continue to grow. To help those in need get through the current economic crisis, United Way of Southern Nevada has released Phase 3 funding of $206,000 through its UWSN Emergency Assistance and Community Needs Fund. These funds will support organizations that are providing direct assistance to homeless teens and families, individuals affected by domestic violence, and refugees.

Through this funding, our compassionate nonprofit partners have been able to continue their essential work of helping members of our community. In just four weeks, Project 150 provided over 800 homeless high school students with family meal bags, which is equivalent to over 6,500 meals. SafeNest has ensured that survivors of domestic violence have safe housing and food for their families. With Phase 3 funding, the ECDC- African Community Center will help provide rent and utility assistance to their clients who have been laid off due to COVID-19 and are refugees.
With our network of 200 nonprofit partners, UWSN is helping to ensure that more Nevadans stay home, stay safe, and recover from the current economic crisis. With $2,180,145 million distributed, UWSN continues to need the community's support to raise an additional $3 million to provide projected needs assistance. UWSN is encouraging organizations and individuals to donate at uwsn.org/donate or by texting "UWSNFUND" to 313131.

Steph chats with Lisa Campbell, the CEO of Create A Change, about the great programs at Clark County School District to help kids be healthy. Hear about demonstrations involving some of our local chefs!

Around the country, obesity is a growing epidemic that is stressing our health care system and this is no less true in Nevada. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approximately 30% of children and adolescents and 60% of adults are overweight or obese in Clark County. This is the first generation of children expected to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. It is well known that unhealthy children do not do well in school. Clark County is the 5th largest school district in the country with abysmal drop-out and graduation rates that are the worst in the nation. Hungry, poorly fed youth rarely excel in the classroom.

A person’s relationship with food and physical activity begins in infancy and is molded during childhood. Childhood obesity can lead to a lifetime of health issues that begin early including diabetes, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, social stigma, and poor academic performance in children and adolescents.

In an effort to support health and wellness in a holistic way, CACN introduced the Healthy School, Healthy Life Program, modeled after the CDC’s Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child (WSCC) framework. The WSCC model is student-centered and emphasizes the role of the community in supporting the school, the connections between health and academic achievement and the importance of evidence-based school policies and practices. Our Healthy School, Healthy Life program includes annual strategic school wellness planning centered around planting desert edible school gardens, family fun “Move Your Way” activities that include Family Fitness Nights and Get Moving Mornings, monthly produce donations for families, chef cooking and nutrition demonstrations, garden clubs, Mindful Health & Wellness education, garden-based activities for youth and families and a Edible Nutrition Curriculum.

Changing the way families live through our Healthy School, Healthy Life program will have long-term if not lifetime impacts. After hands-on learning through family fitness activities, active gardening, nutrition and mindful health and wellness education, we expect kids and families to have a greater understanding of food, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. A sustainable community begins with healthy families.

TEENS TO SPREAD MESSAGES OF HOPE THROUGHOUT COMMUNITY

Sisters Caroline, 16, and Lauren, 15, Edgeworth, co-chairs of Hope Means Nevada Teen Committee, helped organize teens to paint more than 100 river rocks with colorful messages of hope, friendship, love, and acceptance. In honor of International Friendship Day on Aug. 4, teens will host their Hope Rocks activation, starting at Lorenzi Park from 10:15-10:30 a.m. From there, small groups will visit various parks. Rocks will be handled by a person wearing gloves and a mask.

The teens challenge anyone who encounters the river rock to take a selfie with it where found, share it on social media using the hashtag and , and tag on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and then connect with five family and friends to alleviate anxiety and depression.

According to the Nevada Coalition for Su***de Prevention, in 2019, su***de is the leading cause of death for Nevada youth ages 12−19. Nevada has the 11th highest su***de rate in the nation. It is double the national rate.
