“Emotionally? I’m either beaming like I just won the lottery or feral over a lost pen. There is no in-between.”
Welcome to the ADHD experience, where the vibes change faster than your internet tabs. Emotional dysregulation is one of the more overlooked symptoms of ADHD, and one of the reasons people with ADHD are still MISDIAGNOSED. It can lead to extreme outbursts and difficulty tolerating frustration, which can increase daily stress and interfere with interpersonal relationships. For one of the LEAST talked about aspects of ADHD, it can also be one of the MOST disruptive.
Emotional dysregulation is not a matter of willpower. Science shows the main causes in an ADHD brain are an OVERACTIVE amygdala and an UNDERACTIVE frontal cortex. The amygdala triggers emotional responses, so an overactive one is liable to trigger emotions that are stronger than they should be. The frontal cortex is responsible for filtering and inhibiting those emotions so that you can react to a situation in a more adaptive and beneficial manner. If the cortex is underactive, it’s not inhibiting those emotional reactions as well as it could be. Combined, the two are a recipe for impulsive behavior, explosive tempers and hypersensitivity.

ADHD symptoms like inattention, impulsivity, and difficulty with organization and time management can negatively impact employment and earning potential. Adults with ADHD are also more likely to be financially dependent on others and reported more problems with impulse buying, exceeding credit card limits, and a lower saving-income ratio.
The economic burden of ADHD, referred to as the “ADHD Tax”, extends beyond individual financial outcomes, including increased costs for healthcare, medication, and potential public assistance.
