UNLV Thomas & Mack Concourse was opened for students to meet over 200 employers from around the region and country on March 29. The Executive Director of Career Services Eileen McGarry answered questions and explained the specific details related to the cross-campus Career Fair.

McGarry began by outlining the work done by the career services office, particularly with outreach to students. “Our UNLV Career Services office, our campus, is organized where we are kind of a hub for all of the career services on campus, including our centers that offer specific services for students. We all work collaboratively on students’ behalf,” McGarry noted.

The career fair has been a regular occurrence at UNLV and has a standing relationship with employers regularly in attendance as an avenue for students and employers to create and build connections.

Over spring break, a special cohort of students was given the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles to study mass incarceration. I was one of those students.

Although the idea of “school” during spring break seems uninteresting, the lessons learned and experience gained are enough to heighten anyone’s sense of curiosity.

Many recipients of emergency SNAP benefits were left unaware. Under these expanded emergency benefits, more college students were qualified to receive SNAP benefits, but now they may not.

People preaching religion at UNLV is not anything out of the ordinary. Anyone is welcome to share their thoughts with the students on campus, whether it be a guest or student organization. Although allowed, many students are not so welcoming to the guests who are disruptive and disrespectful.

The UNLV Policies website on speech and advocacy reads: “On University grounds open to the public generally, all persons may exercise the constitutionally protected rights of free expression, speech, and assembly.”

The UNLV Lady Rebels 2022-2023 season was nothing short of a historic campaign. The Lady Rebels totalled a record 31 wins as well 18 straight in conference making them undefeated in conference play.

The Lady Rebels tallied more field goals, more 3-pointers and shot the highest free-throw percentage in the clubs history. To go along with those historic marks, this season makes it the Lady Rebel’s second straight regular season title as well as back-to-back Mountain West conference championships. Head Coach Lindy La Rocque has built a mid-major powerhouse with a fairly young team returning next season.

During the Consolidated Students of UNLV Senate meeting on March 20, former Senate President candidate, Zachary Johnigan withdrew from the election with the following statement:

“At this time, the HOPE ticket does not meet the minimum requirements to be recognized as a ticket as per the CSUN By-Laws. At this time I will have to withdraw my candidacy for election to the CSUN executive board. This campaign was a good learning experience. I will use these experiences for my leadership journey moving forward into the future of my service to students and my community. I also intend to continue the mission that was instilled upon me while I served at the College of Southern Nevada, which is to empower our communities and students to achieve, succeed, and prosper.”

Are luxury gyms worth the cost? 💪🏼💰

While many people would associate the word gym with working out, this visualization is now being challenged by the emergence of luxury gyms. From chains across the nation like SoulCycle to Equinox Sports Club, gyms that offer high-quality services are rising in popularity.

Clientele of these exclusive gyms often can be anywhere from high-profile influencers to upper-middle-class citizens, yet there seems to be a commonality that draws different demographics to the same companies.

His research team, Da Kine Lab, looks into hydrogels and thermodynamics to trick water v***r in the atmosphere to become liquid, and thus become usable. Cho explained hydrogels as soft, plastic-like materials that absorb water. An example of a common object made of hydrogels is contact lenses.

UNLV welcomed Brookings Institution senior fellow Dr. Richard Reeves to the Greenspun auditorium on Feb. 22. Reeves was brought to host a discussion about his book, “Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It.”

This was the first return of a Brookings Mountain West lecture of this style in the Greenspun auditorium in three years. In his book’s byline, Reeves posited “A positive vision for masculinity in a more equal world,” and this lecture followed that story through the data and context that shaped the struggles Reeves described.

Students gathered under a backdrop of neon streamers, strobe lights, and brightly colored balloons on Feb. 16 for Rebel Event Board’s (REB) first Rebel’s After Dark Event of the year called ‘Rebels Glow Crazy.’

The event originally was anticipated to have a large turnout as it gained the attention of about 500 students on Instagram but saw a turnout of approximately 350 students in total. In comparison, last semester’s Rebels After Dark saw a record-breaking turnout with 643 students in attendance, according to the Involvement Center’s Event Pass database. Although this event saw a slight drop in attendance, it fares better in comparison to the historical trend of Rebels After Dark events in May of 2022 which recorded roughly 280 students in attendance.

Disgruntled fans let out sighs of frustration and angst. Sent from will-call to staged tables and back, picking up tickets for the event was an unpleasant process. However, confusion and long lines did not discourage fans from attending the highly anticipated Future concert. Once inside Thomas and Mack, energy was high. Hip Hop fans were excited; the lineup for this concert was loaded with southern-based rappers. K Camp, NoCap, Moneybagg Yo, and Future were set to perform.

A concert curated by a Las Vegas-based team, Ikon Presents, was held on the UNLV campus at Thomas and Mack on Feb. 9. Announced on Dec. 15, 2022, ticket prices ranged from $50 to $150 (without taxes and fees). Approximately 15,000 fans filled the venue.

In an effort to provide more mental health resources to the campus community, UNLV hosted a mental health town hall and resource fair Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the UNLV’s Strip View Pavilion at the Thomas & Mack Center. During the seven-hour event, attendees visited to hear President Whitfield speak at a town hall, enjoy refreshments with music, and visit resource booths from a variety of mental health organizations.

According to Mental Health America, Nevada ranks last in access to mental health services. A report published by UNLV’s Brookings Mountain West & The Lincy Institute this past year detailed this ranking by also specifying that Nevada ranked 51st and last among the 50 states in overall mental health rankings. With the Center for Disease Control ranking Nevada 7th for the overall rate of suicides, campus leaders responded to the crisis by hosting biannual resources fairs for students. These past fairs often included workshops, discussions, and resources booths similar to the ones present at this Tuesday’s fair.

Students gathered to attend a showcase of talents at the second Open Mic Night of the school year in the Pida Plaza on Wednesday night. Under ambient lights, students watched live performances from singers, rappers, comedians, and magicians while eating food from Ike’s Love & Sandwiches.

In October, Rebel Events Board (REB) hosted this event as a trial expansion. It originally used to be held in the Student Union theater on campus. After it debuted as a success, the committee decided to continue with its hosting in Pida Plaza.

Mounzer Zein, a long-time member of REB stated last fall that the committee experimented with having the event outside instead of indoors in order to create more of a “cute little cafe vibe.”

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels were tasked with capping off a basketball double-header, which began with the Lady Rebels beating UNR earlier in the day.

The Runnin’ Rebels were greeted with their largest home attendance of the season, rewarding fans with a 68-62 victory to send the Wolf Pack home with two losses in the day.

“There’s no words that can describe how great it was to go out there and see that,” coach Kevin Kruger said postgame. “It had that buzz of a rivalry game.”

Three top student government positions were vacated last semester after students stepped down following a public controversy, leaving the succeeding senate president to fix the damage.

“The main task that I have is to repair our image,” said student body president, Kevin Leon-Martinez.

Last semester, the previous student body president, Issac Hernadez, student body vice president, Dyana Melchor and senate president, Jesse Welch, stepped down from their positions halfway through the school year.

According to their new interim advisor, Marni Dow, the bylaws and constitution of the organization states that if the president, vice president and senate president step down, the third person in line is the senate president pro tempore.

Charlie Hanks, owner and “head witch” of Blaspheme Boutique, describes her store as a “cool, fun, goth, witchy shop.”

Hanks first opened Blaspheme Boutique in March 2015 as an online Etsy shop. Seven years later, in June 2021, she gave the boutique a physical storefront after achieving virtual success.
