Assembly Bill 121, which goes into effect on October 1, outlaws "junk fees," or unexpected mandatory charges that are often tacked onto an advertised monthly rent price after a tenant has signed their lease. On Tuesday, the Nevada Housing Justice Alliance said the new law will protect renters by requiring landlords to include the full monthly rental price in the initially advertised rate, and offer a free option to pay rent—rather than asking tenants to use an app or website that forces them to front a credit card charge or similar fee. The new law also required landlords to provide mandatory refunds for any application or credit check fees landlords accepted for a unit while it was already off the market. Starting October 1, tenants gain increased transparency practices, new legal route to combat noncompliant landlords.
